Fulford a Semifinalist for the Buster Posey Award​

Fulford has long shown he is one of the top defensive catchers in the game as he makes receiving a dynamic pitching staff look easy. He also boasts one of the best arms behind the dish, throwing out 18 of 51 potential base stealers this season.

Catchers on the watch list were nominated by their schools. Statistics to compare them were pulled on May 6, 2021. One key criterion in determining the semifinalists is that they must be the starting catcher for their team in 70% of the games. Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 7, 2021. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All Finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 23rd Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on July 1, 2021.

Higgins attended St. Francis High School in northern California as a high schooler and didn’t leave the region when he headed southeast to keep playing at Fresno State. Though he didn’t play every day as a freshman, he hit, and continued to do so in his pandemic-shortened sophomore season in 2020. He proved it wasn’t a fluke by posting a 1.119 OPS in 2021, giving him the chance to be just the third Bulldogs hitter to be taken in the top 10 rounds since then-catcher Taylor Ward was a first-rounder in 2015.

For a spring that had a dearth of college hitters performing well, it was a little bit of a surprise more scouts didn't see Higgins’ consistently strong season from the right side of the plate. He’s always hit and had big raw power, but with a looser, more flexible body now, he was getting to that power more this season, giving him the chance to hit for both average and some pop at the next level.

Higgins has played both third and left field at Fresno State, spending much more time at the latter this spring. He initially looked uncomfortable in both spots, often going to a knee to field a ground ball, but improved as the spring went on. With an above-average arm and decent hands, a team might want to
