He way outplayed my opinion of him. I realize he was a great value, I can't shake my dislike. It is a me issue, not a him issue.

I think for sure we need one. Can't count on a rookie dominating out the gate no matter where we draft them.

Holmes damn for sure needs to sign a proven veteran outside CB and a proven run stopping DT and not just Buggs either.

I don't really see him spending a lot in this off-season. I think he waits one more year to see how the current roster and incoming rookies pan out - plus they don't have the money this year, but he will next year.

Buggs should be back for depth, but he should not be regular rotation.

Oh, I agree, but Holmes surely needs to add someone with better run stopping ability. I also like Buggs for depth.

I don't think Holmes can enter the draft hoping an DT simply falls into his lap and then expects that rookie to perform right out of the gate. We've seen how that move played out before.

Holmes still needs to draft a run stopping, QB pressuring DT to add to the mix and that aren't many good ones in this draft.

Let him walk.

I know you don't like him, but he'd be pretty cheap at that price just in case TW lll isn't ready when the season begins.

Any suggestions player wise to add as that box safety player in free agency?

Both Homes and Campbell are correct in their assessment regarding free agency. At least for now they are. This defense is so damn far away from being top 8 - top 25% of NFL - that this draft alone can't propel them to that number. Maybe they get a little closer to that top 8 with whoever they draft this year, but I highly doubt it with all the needs at starters and depth/rotational players.

Let’s be clear, the team has not come out and said verbatim that they won’t take swings. But... they’ve come pretty darn close. Here’s general manager Brad Holmes stating that the Lions don’t plan to change their free agent strategy:

“We’re always going to be very strategic and selective with our approach. Regardless of how many resources you have, how much money you can spend, we’re always are very selective and strategic with how we go about free agency.”
Coach Dan Campbell was far more direct, saying they shouldn’t be focused on the cream of the crop in free agency:

“We don’t need to acquire these high-level, you’re paying the most for these guys because they’re rated the No. 1 guy in free agency at that position. We just need to get better. Let’s just get better at areas we need to get better at and focus on that. I think that’s always been the focus.”

Agreed. Tier two more than likely. I sure as hell hope it's not bargain-basement shopping but those type of players are every bit of a chance at disappointing as some of the tier one players and especially at CB.

CB Jamel Dean numbers for Free Agency Market Value by PFF are.

4-years/17M per with 45M Guaranteed

Dean was ranked overall in the last 3-years as the 10th best/20th best/12th best CB in years 2022/2021/2020.

I know fans for damn sure do not want to see that amount of money spent on a Free Agent - especially CB position - however, Dean has never graded below an overall defensive grade of 75 at any time in his career. 2022-78/2021-75/2020-77/2019-76

coverage grades 2022-76/2021-78/2020-80/2019-79

He is worthy of signing if any CB in this Free Agency class is and he's only 26 years old.

It also would help to alleviate the need of possibly spending an extra draft pick to move up from NO.18 into the top 10-15 range to draft one of the Top 3 CB in this draft should Holmes be lucky enough that one of the DL of W. Anderson, J. Carter or T. Wilson falls into his lap at No.6 overall. He knows he cannot count on any particular scenario playing out when the draft comes around.

@Thruthefog will hate this idea but he'll love @broncosmitty idea of signing UFA LB Bobby Wagner.
