I have to disagree. He has only been a starting QB for one full season. I just don't see how he is worthy of such a payday with so short of a career.

Luck has 2 years under his belt but what do you think he will be asking for when it comes 2015-2016? I would be surprised if it was under 20 million. Thats just going off ow he has played in these 2 years. If Colts happen to win a SB before that I would expect it to be in the mid 20s.

So if he is asking for 18 million a year doesnt mean he will get it. Maybe we can talk him down to 16 or 16.5 million a year.
Maybe 15 mil and a lower gtd money for 3 years? Not sure how the 9ers will pay him this kind of money if he isn't willing to bargain. The 9ers do not pay out as they have in the past.

If he wants an extension this year, I would push for lower than that. We have a lot of bargaining power right now. Say we don't re-sign him this year. He plays on a $1 million contract. Then let's say, best case scenario for him, he blows up the league, makes the pro bowl, wins the SB, etc. So we franchise him the following year. He plays two years at a very high level for us for about $9.5 million/year, and then gets say $21 million/year the following year. That's his best-case scenario for the next two years if he plays hardball. Worst-case, he struggles. He gets $1 million this year, and after that we either don't extend him at all, or give him something in the $10-12 million range and he leaves a lot of money on the table.

And if he plays hardball, no more hand-holding. No simplifying the offense. He shows us what he can do and he sinks or swims with it. Of course, the hard part with that is getting the coaching staff to go in for it. Particularly if Baalke and Harbaugh really are at such odds.

He'll bargain. His reps are just putting on a show. The only way I see us paying $18 million annually is if it's a long contract (6+ years) and the final couple years have little to no guaranteed money and a fairly high base.

If the Niners extend Kaepernick's contract, they need to make some of his salary contingent upon a lack of delay-of-game penalties.

In those 2 years Luck took a 2-14 team and turned it around into a 11-5 team his first season and brought them to the play offs both years. His value to the Colts is higher then Kaps value to the 9ers.

I still think that's more on the coaching staff than Kap. Granted he's got to do a much better job with it, but that shit is institutionalized with this coaching staff. And there doesn't seem to be any push to fix the problem, even though it's cost us dearly in both our playoff losses the past two years. Gotta say, that attitude from Kap and Roman has really bothered me.

If he is really demanding $18M, is there really much risk for the 49ers for not extending him this off season? Best case for Kaep - He plays well next season (pro bowl, SB), his stock will go up to maybe $20M like Flacco? There isn't really much difference IMO. Like someone else said, he is not a FA. I would offer him $12M - $14M. If he declines, let the next season plays out and see what happens.

I say pay him the 1 mill this year, stack our roster deeper for another Super Bowl run, then tag his ass next offseason then worry about it.

His demands mean we have 17 mill less to spend elsewhere. This is why us and Seattle are in such a good position with these cheap QBs

You know... This is not a bad plan. Why are we in such a hurry to get this done? I would like another year to see how this plays out. Why pay more now when we just dont need to?

We tag him the next 3 year it will gost the 49ers something like 21 million a year. I rather get him for cheaper now. Look what happen to the ravens. They waited and BOOM they win the Superbowl and had to pay him more. IF I recall Flacco was asking for like 16-17 million a year and then he won the superbowl he got what 20-21 million. Big difference.

If I was the 49ers offer a 3 year contract that starts this year. U buy out his last year of his rookie contract. So instead of making 1 million he will make 15 million. That's 14 million more. The next 2 years he makes 15 million to buy out his franchise tag makes a little less that he is asking for but overall making more overall. 3 year 45 million.

Its a win for both parties.

If Kaepernick gets the 18 million they were talking about on ESPN this morning, the team is sunk. Hopefully they are not stupid enough to go back into salary cap hell for Kaepernick.
