Jets QB Mark Sanchez's new contract is a 3-year extension for $40.5 million, giving him five total years for $58.25 million, with $20.5 million fully guaranteed

Keep in mind he signed his contract when rooks were paid obscenely. The new money actually isn't going to be very much by the time he gets to those years IMO. Great way to buy low.

I think this was a perfect time to give him an extention. Sanchez has proven he's at least CAPABLE of playing at an extremely high level. People seem to be willing to forgive bad play from Alex Smith in years past, but Mark Sanchez has 2 and a half more years to get to Alex's age and it seems like most people have written him off because of one bad year.

Why is everyone giving up on this guy already? He's been in the league three years, plays in an archaic offense that is run by one of the worst OCs in the business. What do people expect?

Let us go way back to 4 months ago.

The Jets were 8-5
Sanchez had 50 starts in the NFL at the time. *Smith started his 51st, week 1 of 2011*

His finish to the season
9 turnovers in 3 games.

Overall his 2011 was a bit better than 2006 Smith but a bit worse than 2009 Smith.

Love this quote from Sanchez about the Manning hunt:

"The best part about it is, they chose to stick with me. I'm going to be their starting quarterback for the next few years here and that's exciting. I'm the leader of this team and I'm excited to get back."

The next few years? That's confidence. I'd be like, "I'm the QB of the future and we're gonna make some things happen." Sanchez is like, "Well, I'm sticking around for a couple more years, at least." I don't know, I just can't get behind him. He's got some talent, but he's so inconsistent. Playing for Rex Ryan, I'm not sure how much that will change.

i was shocked by this. He is making $10 million a year and one of the highest paid QB's in the NFL and hasn't come close to playing like one. I know wins are all that matters in the NFL and he has been very good in the playoffs but damn thats alot of money. Now the ball is in Sanchez and the Jet's OC's court. They have to figure this thing out and decide how this thing is gonna work.

agreed.

did he play well in the play-offs?

Of his six postseason games, he has three passer ratings above 100, and one at 93 (the other two are in the 60s). He only broke 200 yards passing in two of those, though, and and his team only cracked 20 points twice. Some of his performances are pretty reminiscent of Smith's Championship game performance, which was a 97 rating for perspective.

Unreal 5yr 58mil??? He definitely doesn't deserve to get paid over 10mil a year.

Is this the price of the Jets openly asking about Manning and hurting the Sanchizes feelings? So when Manning turned them down, they had to overpay for Sanchez to keep him from demanding a trade?

don't think teams can think like this? ok, maybe a LITTLE.

cause then this would also apply to other top players, making it 'never ending'.

Maybe not. Smith's game against the Giants didn't seem all that good to me, but his rating was very high. A couple big TD plays when you don't throw much and don't have INTs can make a big difference.
