Like I said before media induced QB controversey. I'm sure they'll find a way to induce it one more time between now and training camp though!

Didn't Harbaugh say after the Gaints loss that Smith would have to compete for the job and won't be handed anything?

You dont think Harbaugh tells every guy on that team from day 1 that they need to compete for a starting role? Whether its a UDFA vs Willis, J. Smith, etc...

Like i said we all know its not true but there def is some competition and of course the key guys will win and start, but competition in practice and training camp make the team better.

What Harbaugh tells his guys in private doesn't matter. How competing with Willis/Bowman to start inside on defense? Who's competing with Justin Smith to start at RDE? These guys are guaranteed starting position.

Every guy on the team at that said position is competing with them. Of course those guys will start but its still a competition, so i guess if your a new UDFA you might as well just not even try and compete then huh? Just quit football while your at it then too?

hockey's point is that there is competition which does not equate to controversy. I agree.

I think what Harbaugh was saying after the Championship game is that no one - including Smith - is being handed anything. Meaning if Smith thinks he can just waltz in next season and the job his his no matter his attitude or play that's not the case. I doubt Harbaugh is expecting anything of the sort from Smith, but it doesn't hurt to keep him fired up and on his toes and ready to fight.
