LOL @ Spring Training stats.

It's always been a game of statistics. Spring stats are meaningful but only temporarily, especially in weeding out the good guys from the bad. They just give you a glimpse of how guys new or old might do. If a younger player goes 2 for 20, he won't hang around. If an old expert like Utley does it, well, he'll come out of it. The stats show Gwynn is a keeper. Same for Rupp. I admit they do nothing to predict what kind of year Howard will have. He does look healthy. What would we do w/o stats?

No, the stats of 605 games and 1495 at-bats show that Gwynn is a AAA ball player.

Maybe on a decent team he is an AAA ball player, but he seems to fit the 2014 Phils just fine.

But on a team that's still fooling around with guys like Susdorf, it's a pleasure watching Gwynn play in the spring. He hit .280 in AAA and only .244 with several ML teams. So if you give the guy a shot and he hits .300, even though it's ST, you gotta consider him. He might turn out to be the same dud who hit .232 for LA, but w/o stats you might never give him another chance.

Gwynn is hungry. He knows this could be his last chance to play in the bigs. He is putting in a good effort. Plus he is a good fielder and that helps too.
