What if the contract doesn't get Geno to $30M until the 3rd year? The first year might be around $18M, 2nd year $25M, 3rd year $30M. Would that change anything in your assessment on whether it's too much? By the time the 2025 season gets here, $30M might be only a shade over 11% of the cap.
Thats a possibility …

Read this article that discuss Geno and his contract.

How has this become our reality? How have we gone from the Russell Wilson trade, embracing an opportunity to draft a replacement and potentially benefit from years of cost-effective quarterback play, to having a serious debate about paying Geno Smith a similar salary to the one they shipped to Denver 12 months ago?

Smith had one good season in a journeyman career. It wasn’t even a full season of quality play either. You can make the arguments about why his form tailed off and some are valid points to raise. Yet the truth is he still made errors and could easily have had more turnovers — as noted in a previous article:

I only post that little bit it goes on and makes the concerns I feel we all should have about signing Geno to a big contract.

Loved the quote they used for the reason so many fans want to resign Geno "Better to be middling and comfortable, while hoping somehow a better situation falls into your lap"

I agree with this take. I am sorry to all you Geno White Knights out there that want to pay him 30 mill or more to keep him but the truth is he isn't as good as you all think. He had a great season but he was also very lucky very often this past year. Hey that's how it works some times. Teams have won the Superbowl because of luck. Players have earned big contract because of luck but lets not ignore that with just a couple bad bounces Geno's season doesn't look so hot. Geno was Lucky to not have more than 11 INT's as 6 INT were flat out dropped! Would you all feel the same if he had finished with 17+ INT's?? No I don't think so.

"PFF listed turnover worthy plays by each quarterback, Smith had the second most in the NFL"

These are plays that should have resulted in a turnover but didn't.

he then noted that when looking at the top-10 quarterbacks — on average 80.6% of their turnover worthy plays had resulted in actual turnovers. In comparison, Geno Smith saw only 48% of his turnover worthy plays actually result in an interception. If he’d thrown the 80.6% average like the rest of the QB’s in the top-10, he would’ve had 25 picks. Even if he’d had a still well below average 65% — he would’ve led the league in turnovers.

I don't see too many folks saying we should be giving Geno 40 million AAV. So it's kinda weird that people keep bringing it up as a thing.

Incentives are a non-starter.

Not everyone thinks he'll lget 40m AAV, but it isn't like the number came from nowhere. It has a sources, and it's sources that have been fairly trustworthy in the past. Will he get it? I highly doubt it. Can he get it? Stranger things have happened.

His performance last year would suggest that he gets close to 40 million. But there are other factors at play.

For better or worse, I think Jamal Adams will be on the roster in 2023. Apparently he's still limping, but the Seahawks have invested so much in him both in terms of draft picks and salary that I think they'll give him one more shot if he's able to recover from his injury.
Yeah, there has been significant investment in him for sure, and it also doesn't make financial sense to part ways with him right now. It would actually cost the team less cap space to keep him ($18M) than to cut him ($21M), and his issue has been health and not ability. Maybe a different story a year from now, but I agree with you he's likely to be around for another season at least.

If we cut Adams post June 1st, we save 11 million in the cap. But if he isn't health, I don't think we can cut him.

Diggs could also be a cap casualty.

Yeah, with the other half of the dead money pushed to next year. I guess they can keep that card in their pocket for the summer.

Yeah, wow, scheduled to cost $18M against the cap. That's a ton for a 30 year old safety. I think he's still pretty good, but maybe they can add 1 more year on his deal and level the bubbles a bit.

From the way things look it seems management really wants to keep him but there is no way we give this guy top 5 QB money. I would entertain a trade straight up for Lamar Jackson or sign Derek Carr. I was really not impressed with what he did over the last 5 games he did to finish the season.

Who here wants to pay him, "30 million or more?"

Carr is getting released, whatever he signs for will probably dictate what Geno gets.

IDK Carr has a solid track record through out his career, while Geno is a aging one year wonder. Carr should get a much better offer that Geno will.

Geno Smith is one year older than Derek Carr.

So whatever he gets, probably the ceiling for geno. could be good or bad for us.
