I originally thought this was a rookie mistake and is not a smart thing to say, which might still be true, but I could see that this is ineffectual, because teams still think that Manning might be able to heave far, or it could also set up a deeper throw if teams start to think he can't (if he can) and start inching forward.
I imagine that if he couldn't do it, the Broncos wouldn't call deeper passes because teams would notice that he's not attempting the ones where a deep guy gets separation. If he can do it, they might still not call those plays until later. Right now, as always, it'd nice to keep people guessing and use it when needed. If he can and the defense doesn't cover, he could have used those passes against Atlanta. So saving the plays isn't always a focus.
