Yankees signed McCann for 5 years, $85 Million with an option for a 6th year to take the contract to $100 Million. So with Ruiz and McCann off the market and a very unlikely reunion with Salty, it's looking more like Soto might in fact start the season as the primary starting C. I'm ok with that as long as we can add one (or more) of the other top bats left available. That list reads (in no particular order):

Cano
Ellsbury
Choo
Beltran
Napoli
Granderson
Cruz

There's also the trade route, where these names have been mentioned by sources of varying credibility as possible targets:

Kemp
Ethier
Bautista
Wieters
Tavares

And there's still always the chance the Rangers swing the much talked about deal for Price.

I'd personally like to see 2 more moves happen, either adding 2 big bats or 1 bat and Price. The offseason has started well with the upgrade in power from Kinsler to Fielder, and just a few more moves puts the Rangers back in the driver's seat in the AL.

Who from this of players are you guys hoping for the most?

I want every free agent, and if they don't sign here, then they suck at baseball. And JD sucks if he doesn't sign them all. Bob and Ray are billionaires. Spend that money!!!!!

That's ok. While he'd be useful for us 5/85 ain't cheap. I think the organization will still expedite the process of getting Alfaro ready. He's still a year or two away but we'll be fine.

Yeah, I get tired of people freaking out about the Rangers every time a potential free agent addition gets signed by someone else. Like jta said, I kind of expected them to lessen their pursuit of McCann once Fielder was brought on board. That's a lot of $$ to give a catcher, even one as good as McCann, when you have other needs to fill. If the Rangers do decide to lose their minds and go nuts/all-in, I think it will be for the Cano signing-Price acquiring combo. Otherwise, I think we'll probably see two slightly less expensive players in the Granderson-Cruz-Napoli range brought in. I'd be totally cool with that.

Agreed. For some reason I was just never as excited about the prospect of signing McCann as some others were. He's a great player, but he's also had some up and down seasons. Plus I've always liked Soto and what he brings... not an All-Star by any stretch but very capable nonetheless. Also, as you pointed out, we do have Alfaro in the not-too-distant future.

Also reported is that the Cardinals are on the verge of signing Jhonny Peralta. It doesn't really affect the Rangers other than potentially signaling the end of the Profar or Andrus for Taveras or Miller talk (unless the Cards plan on transitioning Peralta to the OF as some have suggested).

:agree: just hope JD doesn't get shutout 2 years in a row on the free agent market.

I wouldn't mind Navarro at all as a cheap backup for Soto. Anything is an improvement over the days of Yorvit Torrealba.

Jd will improve this team. I don't care if it's through free agency or another trade.

And I just read McMann received a FULL no trade. (to your point about Alfaro)
that's what did it...makes sense now, since the money was reasonable

Can't blame McMann for not wanting the no-trade

I'm thinking granderson is a real possibility.
We do need another RH power stoke...kinda hope it's not Cruz myself.
Maybe another trade.

There's really only one more spot in the outfield. Unless jd makes room by trading Rios. I doubt he'd do that. Rios should be a pretty productive player for us

meh, I saw this coming when we signed Soto to be out "number one" so I am not that shocked. Still had a little hope that that was some sort of cover but there are still a a lot of tasty options on the market. I think the Rangers still have one more blockbuster trade up there sleeve in addition to maybe grabbing a to FA. Should get interesting really soon.
