None of these free agents excite me, for a variety of reasons
I like a few of them
Yan Gomez, Freddie Freeman, Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Correa, Seager, Story, Chris Taylor, Canha, Schwarber, Marte, Conforto,
Jon Gray, Kershaw, Stroman, Syndergaard..

knowing the Rangers approach i could believe a situation like
Anthony Desclafani 3 years $40 million
James Paxton 2 year $24 million
Tommy Pham 2 year $30 million
Starling Marte 5 year $120 million
It would add about $64 million to the payroll next year. Their payroll after this year is basically nothing and probably won’t be allowed to be that low or maybe just frowned upon if they don’t spend next off-season.
I think they don’t want to handicap themselves too much so will stick with shorter deals for the most part while still “making a splash” and spending some money.

To me, it seems as though the market has been trending towards longer deals. The shorter the deal, the more spare the player, generally speaking.

Those three he mentioned for shorter deals are fairly close to spare. That is why I would avoid them.

What my ideal contract-size roster would be in 2023.

19 or 20 guys making close to the league minimum (matured prospects)----$20 million total
2 guys making in the $30 million AAV area code ----$60 million
2 guys making 15-20 million AAV range--------------$35 million
2 more guys making $5-10 million AAV---------------$15 million

Total payroll--------------------------------------------$130 million

That gives you plenty of room to grow when guys go to arbitration. You could even sign another fairly big contract if you are sure that some of your arbitration guys can eventually be traded and replaced from a farm system that continues to develop.

That gives you six free agents or guys to trade for. I still think the best option for an ace is via trade in about 1 to 2 years.

When I consider what I think we should go after in free agency it is with this type of scenario in mind.

I wouldn’t want the Rangers to make these deals. These are the deals I could see them making lol

I would rather go after Story, Chris Taylor, Syndergaard and Gray.
I see nothing wrong with trying to add some valuable long term pieces to the club and then let the prospects come up and fill the holes. I wouldn’t sign Culberson/Holt type players.. or any pitching reclamation projects or spot fillers..
Let the young guys come up and rotate through positions/playing time to see who fits and also to not wear them out during their first year of mlb. There’s plenty of ABs to go around even if we sign 2 bats
Same on the pitching side..you can never have too much pitching now a days.

That ties us with the Pirates.

If Arizona can hold what is at least a 5 run lead in the 9th we will only be 1.5 games behind them.
