Perhaps my mom was hanging on to see me because I just got word that she passed away today. With my mother-in-law passing away two weeks ago, this has been a hell of a summer. At least I did get the chance to see her one last time and we had a good conversation.

Most people in the US are one major medical bill from bankruptcy. A lot will not financially survive a trip via ambulance to the ER, let alone weeks of inpatient care.

I have "excellent" (comparatively) insurance that has an out of pocket maximum which I have reached every year for the last 8, after which they pay fully. I now set aside that amount out of my salary in a health savings account, simply expecting to be out that amount of cash. And if I had had that amount already spent out of pocket or set aside in one lump sum, I could invest it and likely retire in 3 years. Or be driving a Porsche with no payments.

I have a high-deductible plan with a $5000 family out-of-pocket maximum. So, if that was the only medical cost for the year, that's all it would cost.

/We usually hit our out-of-pocket maximum by October, even without any hospital bills.
