So all of Cooke's dirty hits were "hockey plays?" I guess that's why no Pens brass/player/fan had a problem with Ulf/Cooke until Sid got hurt. All we heard was "Cooke's really a good player, I wish he wouldn't play like that."

No, not all of Cooke's dirty hits were hockey plays. The elbow which got him suspended wasn't, but it did occur during game play. That's where the difference lies. Cooke's actions were scummy, no one is saying otherwise. Ulf was a dirty player. We acknowledge these things. But Thornton stepped farther over the line with that action.
And we did want Cooke to clean up his act, because when he wasn't busy making stupid dirty plays, he was an effective hockey player. He was a good penalty killer, sound defensively otherwise, could score goals, and was very good on the cycle.
