No player should have to fight after a clean hit, but I will say this, another member of the Pens COULD have stepped up and fought Shawn Thornton - for example, it would be like this - "Hey, you're not fighting him, but you can fight me" and I feel like that's a way you can police the game because then you set guidelines and you make sure that the opposing player understands that there are certain paths he can't cross

That being said, the refs did a poor job of handling the whole thing from the start - doesn't excuse the bad behavior from Shawn Thornton but a smart ref understands well before when things are going to get bad

you're not paying attention pix... its karma so that is allowed.....

on a very serious note I hope orpik is ok that reminded me eerily of bertuzzi on moore not the actual style of attack but the result and potential serious injury. did this all start on a open hit on a bruins player from orpik and he didnt fight thorton so he got him later?

Who said it was allowed Matt? Again, I was the first to say Thornton was wrong. Some Pens fans called for jail time. All I did is point out that 2 former Pens goons never faced jail time for purposely injuring players.

i didnt see that one. and yes I hope that smarmy little prick is ok and healthy too. I dont wish that type of injury on anyone no matter my dislike. shanny is going to be busy

going to be interesting when these 2 meet in the conf finals.

Yeah, it was a knee to the head too, Neal will probably get something for it, suspension/fine.

No I agree its sloppy but as far as being a competitive game makes it a good game I guess.

Yeah, I'm a sucker for graceful games, I guess.

Iggy with a hold, and Marchand being...well, his usual self. Don't let him get to you Olli.

Despres looks good again tonight. The penalty aside, he's been very strong in his own end.

And yeah, hopefully Maata doesn't let Marchand get under his skin.

And our powerplay is gone. Rats.

Ulf and Cooke are history and not relevant. Thornton was wrong in the way he went about it with Orpik. Let me say I can see how he gets pushed over the edge though. Orpik hits and injures Eriksson with a questionable at best hit predatory at worst. Thornton later tries to make Orpik atone for his actions. He refuses and Thornton is sent to the box. Then Marshand gets kneed in the head and there is a gathering of players and one is Orpik. He takes his shot. He will be suspended for that and should be.

The only reason I felt it wasn't related to Neal was because he didn't attack Neal, and actually went around Dupuis to get to Orpik. If a guy doesn't want to fight he has the right to not fight. That's what peeves me.

Rask looks terrible, he is lunging on everything, definitely not a Rask type game.

You shouldn't HAVE to fight to prevent goonism. Goonism shouldn't exist. And considering Thornton's actions, I doubt he would've stopped even if someone else had stepped up.

Engelland did drop the gloves with Lucic. If someone stepping in would have resolved the issue, that should have been it.

I agree, no question, it shouldn't come to that point, but as long as the NHL doesn't change the rules, that's what players are going to have to do

I should have said in my last post that I watched the 1st period and listening to the 2nd on the Pens app and Mike Lange makes it sound more exciting than it may be. Didn't mean to come off wrong by saying "I guess".

The only difference there is that it wasn't Shawn Thornton dropping the gloves, I feel the only way that solves something is if you drop the gloves with the guy who pulled off the actions - and if you're the Bruins, why would you want Milan Lucic dropping the gloves with a fourth liner anyways? That would hurt the Bruins

Except that you're deluding yourself into thinking we're not aware that the shoe has been on our foot. But those incidents and this incident are unrelated.

And how many owners have you heard chastise their players, exactly?

This was my argument when that crap went down. And for that point, it's pretty rare for teammates to PUBLICLY chastise a teammate.

The league could ban fighting today and we all know it. they could also increase suspensions and fines for dirty hits. The question is why don't they?

Yes I will be anxiously awaiting the Bruins teammates and owner come out and condemn Thornton.
