Yeah it makes our mid to late 20's busts a lot less bad than top 5 or top 10 picks.

Cleveland's history of QB busts in the 1st round alone is incredible. By a technicality, the Deshaun Watson trades don't count, but it's the worst trade in NFL history.
But our QB busts in round 1 were taken in the 20s, too.

So we've got that going for us?

#1 overall pick. Team traded up for him and gave up future draft stock. Carter had what, 1 - 100 yard game against Denver or something like that. Only game I can remember him actually getting a 100 yards +, and I think 1 run was like 70+ yards.
I understand all of that. Torn ACL his rookie year...in 1995 that wasn't a "common" surgery. That right there derailed, IMO, his entire career. He never looked the same again. Then he went on to suffer a broken wrist, knee cap, and tore his rotator cuff.

I mean - I get all of what you are saying, and if he were even remotely healthy - I would 100% agree...I just think the severity, timing, and amount of injuries make it really hard to say he's a bust, by my definition. To me...a bust is a guy with high hopes who simply just ended up being complete ass on the field. That's why I say Trent Richardson. We'll never know with Carter because he was rarely healthy...

I kind of agreed with this......but was said they knew he had some major issues already before entering the NFL? If that's true then I think that changes things.

I agree......many fans think all picks need to be studs and just not the case. For instance, is Anthony Schwartz a bad pick? I guess, but majority of 3rd rounders amount to very little or nothing at all.

I do think can call TRich a bust and despite having him a short time and trading him for a 1st after more consideration I think we should get the "credit" as the drafting team.
I'd probably limit this to 1st & 2nd Rd picks only... We get too far into the weeds with anything after that. And there should be plenty enough ammo in the 1st Rd picks to have our contenders to debate with. Unless we find one position is harder to figure out... then we can open it up to more

But you have SO MANY OF THEM.

Mayfield (That you ran off), Manziel, Weeden, Quinn, Couch.

And 3 first round picks for Deshaun Watson. You could have gotten Kenny Picket or Malik Willis in 2022, or Will Levis in 2023. Because we know you wouldn't have taken someone good.

Mayfield is far from a bust. Nor is Couch.....his career derailed by injuries. That's 3 busts in my lifetime (I'm 55) and maybe longer. None earlier than pick 22. Hardly a history of busts at the QB position.

Watson irrelevant to the discussion as we didn't draft him.

Just let me hate your team as much as I can, whether it's completely rational or not. A little bit of fudging at the edges, maybe.

OK....I can appreciate the honesty.

And to be fair shouldn't be too hard to find real things you can rip us for.

For QB, it has to be Smith. It's not just that Smith was an awful QB, but it's what the Bengals DIDN'T do in that draft. The Saints were willing to trade their entire draft to swap with the Bengals, so they could take Ricky Williams. The Bengals probably end up with a crappy QB anyway (maybe McNown?), but they would have had multiple picks in the other rounds to build up a horrible roster.

Akili Smith for QB

On KiJana Carter...I remember getting his rookie card and putting it in one of those card cases because I just knew his card was going to be worth tons of money one day. He blew out his knee and I threw the card away.

Okay, we settled on Akili Smith at QB.

We doing RB's now, or did we settle that debate yesterday too between Richardson and Carter?

Let me know when we move on to WR's, I got a couple Bengals for that one too. This tic-tac-toe is going to be filled with Bengals, I will see to it with great help from Mike Brown.

Richardson for RB...he was healthy, he had HUGE expectations - and despite his health, dude was literally like watching one of us out there. It was bad.

RB to add to the list: Archie Griffin

Selected 24th overall in the same draft, Griffin scored only seven touchdowns in his seven-year NFL career (all with Cincinnati), without scoring a touchdown through four consecutive seasons and never leading the Bengals in rushing during any season. Griffin's career-year came in 1979, compiling 688 yards rushing in '79.

College Success prior to getting drafted:

Archie Griffin will go down as one of the best running backs in Ohio State history, posting over 4,700 yards rushing in his final three seasons with 23 rushing touchdowns. Griffin is the only player in the history of college football to win two Heisman trophies. He also won two Big Ten MVP awards, was a two-time Walter Camp Foundation top player of the year, and the Maxwell Award winner in 1975. Griffin is also only one of two players ever to start in four Rose Bowl games. His number 45 was retired by the Buckeyes. He's enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame, the Varsity O Hall of Fame and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
