Hosmer is a Golden Glove 1st base that hits for average and has decent power... He is going to get PAID.
Hosmer will get paid becuase he is the heart and soul and leader of a team that won the world series- but really- he has had 2 years where he was a reasonably above average major leaguer. I mean- i think he will have another one this year too....he was pretty awful in 12 and 14

I wouldn't be pinning my hopes on Mondesi if I were you.. he strikes out way to much and can't get on base in the minors... no reason to think he is magically going to morph into a decent on base guy.
He doesn't really have to hit much from what I have seen of him defense and base running wise to be useful. Bat to ball skills are actually good too. His pitch recognition leaves... a lot to be desired; hence the K's. I'd be unsurprised if he is Alcides Escobar 2.0 at some point.

Thing is if he ever avoids these 1-2 month stretches of being complete ass, all of the sudden you're talking a 5-6 WAR 1B and that's just going to command stupid money. A small market committing a 200 million dollar contract to a 1B is insane.
They won't. The smart move is to trade him at the first smell of not making a legit WS run and get as much as they can for him... His value will never be higher than it will be this year at the trade deadline. If they traded Hosmer, Cain, and Escobar away.. they could probably land enough MLB ready talent to stay relevant and keep Moustakas.

Cespedes played amazing last year though....a lot better than Upton....dont ya think?
so what... do you want to bet on cespedes repeating that at the age of 30 or Upton having the better seasons moving forward?

you have to be able to get on base to be a threat on the base path...

mondesi's numbers look an awful lot like steven moya's minus the HR and slugging percentage.. good luck with that.

Yes, but it's still an asset nonetheless. Nobody disputes Mondesi has to be better, offensively, or else it's going to be pretty tough for him to be more than a very shiny UIF.

i don't even think he will be shiney.. the kid is possibly the most over hyped prospect in baseball.. his numbers are puke inducing.

i dunno...what does Upton do better- besides 20-30 points of obp? I think its close- but Cespedes was at 290 35/100 .870 ops last year...thats mvp consideration...id bet on Cespedes, but its not like there is a humongous difference...Cespedes plays better D too-- all though- both guys have been traded around quite a bit due to not having the best clubhouse reps...

ask bums about K/bb rate in the minors to project quality MLB hitters... he knows all about it.

20-30 points of OBP with equal HR power? lol.. that is huge. Cespedes has had one real legit season... upton puts up 25 hr and .340+ obp every year.

im sorry.. but cespedes and upton are pretty comparable players.. and when you have two guys that are for the most part comparable... you take the younger one every time when it comes to investing big money.

just saying- Cespedes reached 35 hrs, 105 rbis and an ops of 870.....Upton has reached 30 homers once (31 in 2011), never reached 105 rbis, and has not had an ops of over 870 since 2011....if i were to guess who would be BETTEr i would have go cespedes- especially considering the defense- but their is not a wide gulf there.

this thread would be awesome if it was more balanced between the 5 AL central teams... its all indians/tigers/royals..... the twins fans rarely pop in and there is never a white sox guy around.

Well, we should count our blessings on that last bit, otherwise we'd have to hire security and keep our hands on our wallets.

big decision to make coming up- in a keeper league i have had going for almost 10 years now--- you get 5 keepers- and if u use all 5 you lose your first 5 draft picks---- 15 team Roto league..

obviously I am keeping:
Harper
Kershaw
Votto

have to make some tough decisions after that though:
Kluber
Fernandez
Davis

not sure who to keep there.

I hear you. I'm in a league that keeps 10 MLB and 5 minors. I've got:

Kershaw
Price
Bumgarner
Archer
Hamels

Harper
Jose Abreu
Cano
Frazier
Sal Perez
Carlos Gomez
Jhonny Peralta
Melky

Gotta drop/trade away three.

Lol.

No.

I hope you're right.

Otherwise we're stuck with an overpaid middling Leftfielder in his thirties. Nobody wants that.
you have to be the most pessimistic person i have ran into... hell.. maybe an earthquake will open a sinkhole and swallow the entire state of MI... lol

what about justin upton's numbers over his career makes you think he is going to be a middling outfielder?
