Look, you can spend as much time as you want trying to compare Avila to Gomes.
Once given regular ABs in 2013, Gomes slashed .319/.385/.485/.869 in his final 49 games and followed that up with .278/.313/.476/.785 in 2014. Five games into 2015, a collision at the plate sprained his MCL and kept him out for almost a month and a half. He came back weak in late May and got stronger as the season went on, finishing with a .264/.286/.471/.757 line in September. He's also a plus backstop.
If you consider that a bum, and want to pretend as if you wouldn't be talking about how fucking awesome his 2016 was going to be if he were a Tiger, I'm content to let you.
