I assume either Huff OR Murphy makes the team, the other will be DFA’d. Or maybe Huff is just churn to increase our non-roster catching depth (a legit weakness in this org)

That, or they know something about Murph's medicals that we don't.

I just don't see much downside to the Verlander signing given we didn't sign a longer term elite starter.

Hope the Giants capitalize on his stature by bringing back Panda and Zito as assistants and have JV throw BP against them. That I'd pay to see
Just guessing here but JV's contract probably stipulates NO PANDA.

And after losing Snell and losing out on Burnes (assuming we actually went after him, which I actually seriously question), what ace could the Giants have acquired? None were avail in FA, so we would have had to look in the trade market. And if you think we would have been able to acquire an ace without parting with Eldridge PLUS, you are crazy. And this is not a major league squad that should be looking at trading guys like Eldridge or Whisenhunt.
I get the sense that they more "kicked the tires" on Burnes than seriously negotiated with Boras.

From Brisbee today re: JV

If you’re wondering if this is a sign that the Giants are out on Roki Sasaki, you can relax. Every team in baseball would make room for him, even the ones with a full rotation. If the Tigers had five Tarik Skubals, they’d trade one to make room. If the Giants don’t get Sasaki, it’ll be because he’s scared of Shohei Ohtani, sea lions or both. He’s welcome to prove me wrong. Until then, Giants fans can just enjoy the future Hall of Famer.

Not that backup catcher is generally a huge need, but the Giants had a concerning amount of reliable depth behind Patrick Bailey. Sam Huff gives them someone who can adequately play the position and offer a little bit of offense. No MiLB options.

If only they had a former #2 overall pick in the system to back him up…

The Giants have acquired a few catchers in the past months and now have this depth behind Bailey:
1. Tom Murphy - The big question is, will he be able to play this year?
2. Sam Huff - Will the Giants try to sneak him through waivers if Murphy is healthy or carry three catchers again for OP?
3. Blake Sabol - He had good numbers with SF last year in 11 games but his offensive numbers in AAA were underwhelming. However, I just found that he threw 35% of opposing base stealers there, so there is that at least.
4. Max Stassi - Will he be able to play this year?
5. Logan Porter - Somehow the Giants snookered him into returning this year after trading him quickly after acquiring him last year
