A one year deal so very little risk. I approve, but think we will be thrilled to get even 2 WAR from him. I agree with @tzill about Sasaki, can never have too many arms. I think that’s unlikely though

We got Randy Johnson for the last year of his career too. 87 ERA+ but did have an 8-6 record

I don't care how embarrassing the riches of arms the best armed team is, they should be all in on Sasaki. It would be ridiculous that a team could just skip over that opportunity.

We so rarely win the big time bidding wars

For some reason I thought he was a bit better than that but not too surprising that it was an 87 ERA+ season. The exact comp I started thinking about when the idea of Scherzer or Verlander signing with the Giants would be. Not sure it makes the team any better but it makes the team more fun to watch. If we got Adames, bring Verlander too. No draft picks lost either.

But that is the weird thing about Sasaki, it is not the traditional big time bidding war. All 30 teams could afford him! Its more about selling some unknown parts of the team (location? other Japanese players? lack of Japanese players? becoming a cornerstone of the team? being a supporting player? Who knows!) that any of the 30 could attempt to do. All are in the same area of darkness on how to best present themselves, might as well go all in!

So that give us a rotation of:

Webb/Ray/Verlander/Harrison/Hicks.

I still want Sasaki.
This might convince Sasaki that we are serious about contending and it might be enough for him to sign with us. I doubt it though, but it would be nice. Giants should be calling him letting him know we are still very interested, and this doesn’t change him not having a spot as one of our starters.

I'm normally about "let the kids play!" but with all of Roupp, Black and Birdsong, I think there is some more time that they need in AAA. Hicks is hardly a guarantee to stay in the rotation. I'm not ready to move on with Beck or Winn but neither (especially Winn) looked that good as a starter.
There could be a lot of room with this rotation for these guys to get starts and show something in 2025. I'm good with this.

It really just depends upon Verlander's health. If he can give us 100+ innings, make 20+ starts, and 2.0 WAR, it's a fair contract. And he can mentor Bird, Harry, Winn, Whiz, Hicks, Roupp, Black, etc.GguwQKjW8AAcDni.jpeg

He looked pretty washed last season. 2 WAR seems unlikely

I am good with Webb picking his brain as well.

I REALLY like this signing. But, imho, it locks us as a non-contender. But I am OK watching a HOFer in his last year if we are going to suck anyway. I am OK with bringing in Max Max as well.

could be. I think he'll be ok. Again, 20 starts, 100 innings 2 WAR.
To get that much WAR in just 100 innings means he has like a 2.90 ERA. Not happening.

I don't expect that level of contribution. I'd be happy with a 1 WAR year from him. I expect 4th or 5th starter level production and will be grateful for anything more.
