If we get 15 starts out of him and/or 100 IP, this will be a GREAT signing. I don’t really care if he has a 5.30 ERA as long as he puts asses in seats and eats a few innings.
Each of Verlander's four pitches graded as above average by Stuff+ in 2024 despite 5.48 ERA in 90.1 innings. Expected ERA was 3.88. Missed time with shoulder inflammation and a neck issue. Strikeout rate has declined every year since 2019, from 35.4% to 18.7% last year.To get that much WAR in just 100 innings means he has like a 2.90 ERA. Not happening.

I think he can get to 2 WAR.
This I feel is where his true value can really help. We have a very talented young staff. His guidance could actually eclipse almost anything else he will bring to the plate. He has the possibility of impacting our future in ways we never considered ....i dont care how well he pitches. I look at him more as a someone who can mentor the young kids for a season.
That ship sailed a LONG time ago…Guys, 'mentoring' is nice and all but it's a little overrated compared to players who play good
I wanted an ace, they didn't get one, so I think they will struggle to get even the 3rd wild card
I disagree. Even this team could be a wild card team if more stuff goes right than wrong, which does happen sometimes. They aren't a team like the White Sox or Rockies with zero chance. I would be more positive if they added an ace to replace Snell, to go with Adames and Lee returning etc. That ship sailed a LONG time ago…

I assume either Huff OR Murphy makes the team, the other will be DFA’d. Or maybe Huff is just churn to increase our non-roster catching depth (a legit weakness in this org)Giants Claim Sam Huff, Designate Austin Warren
The Giants claimed catcher Sam Huff from the Rangers and designated reliever Austin Warren for assignment. Read more at MLB Trade Rumors.www.mlbtraderumors.com
Whoever it is, we need a near starter quality back up catcher to spell Bailey.I assume either Huff OR Murphy makes the team, the other will be DFA’d. Or maybe Huff is just churn to increase our non-roster catching depth (a legit weakness in this org)

And after losing Snell and losing out on Burnes (assuming we actually went after him, which I actually seriously question), what ace could the Giants have acquired? None were avail in FA, so we would have had to look in the trade market. And if you think we would have been able to acquire an ace without parting with Eldridge PLUS, you are crazy. And this is not a major league squad that should be looking at trading guys like Eldridge or Whisenhunt.I disagree. As of now they feel like an 84-85 win team erring on the positive side. With an ace I'd feel more like 88-89.

Yes I wanted Snell or Burnes. You don't pay $15M for a mentor. He's expected to produce some. I don't expect all star work but a league average 20 starts wouldn't be unreasonable.i dont care how well he pitches. I look at him more as a someone who can mentor the young kids for a season.
I think that's an entirely reasonable expectation. I would also note that the offseason isn't over yet and they may yet make a move or two.I disagree.
