I dunno, he only pitched in 9 games last year in his age 39 season. Can't think we'd get more than half a year from him in 25.
He did go all Brandon Belt this last year. I guess signing him is really dependent on how much money he wants in the deal. Still on my short list for remaining free agent pitchers worth signing.

If Scherzer is willing to sign for a low base salary (probably 15 million, which is what Alex Cobb signed for) and get incentive escalators that could bump it to 22 million (such as making 30 starts, getting votes for Cy Young award, etc) then I'd be okay with that.

I haven't looked into it to see if true, but the waiver wire, in general, has seemed more quiet this offseason than in the past few years. Maybe it just feels that way because the Giants have been very quiet on it this offseason.
I do agree that some decent players can be picked up this way. What really drove me crazy about FZ's pickups wasn't just the shear volume of claims, it was how quickly the org gave up on those claims. Many of them seem liked they were rejected almost from day one and thus made no sense to even acquire.

Well, there just aren't as many 30-year-old, weak hitting middle infielders as there used to be.

So the Doggies sign Kim ...
Just to clear any confusion, this is the OTHER Kim. Not the former Padre who has long been linked to us.

Unfortunately, this maybe the better of the two. He is younger and defensive wizard. But he is not MLB tested, so there is a significant bust risk. But there is a 2-year TEAM option as part of the deal, so it is low-risk for the doggies.

Did anyone read this article? It seems to suggest that the Giants weren't nearly as in on Burnes as rumors had suggested but I have not invested in a subscription with NYT.

Doesn't look like the Giants are shipping Eldridge anywhere right now.

It sounds like the Giants are focusing on a rebuild. They went after Adames because they still need asses in the seats, but it doesn’t look like they are looking at a second QO, or selling the little farm they do have for “now” players.

Thanks, FZ.

Chapman and Adames contracts may be long enough to be part of a rebuild.

I'm OK in general on passing on FAs or trades who won't be around in 2-3 years. That said I'd like to see better bat at 1st on a short term contract so Eldridge is not rushed or pressured.

Unless Alfonso will sign a 2 year deal, I don't see anyone being picked there on short term deals and providing more production than Wade. Of course, Wade has to stay healthy for him to be productive. Not sure we can count on much from Flores, so there is that too.

I don’t want a QO on a short term deal. That is a horrible strategy. And was FZ’s final parting gift on his way out the door.

I agree that QO FAs are a bad long term strategy. I also think Alfonso has zero interest in a 2 year deal.

However, I think each potential deal should be evaluated on its own merits. IF he were amenable to a 2 year deal AND ownership was ok with spending, say, $60/2 for him I think you’d have to consider it. But as I say, he’s not going to sign a 2 year deal so this discussion is moot.

I think the only QO I would have ANY interest in at this point is Santander. But we don’t have a real long term need for another Solar, DH-type player who will be an albatross WAY too soon.

Only Alonso, Bergman, Santander and Pivetta are still available with QOs attached.

How in the hell did Pivetta get a QO and why in the hell did he refuse it?
