The downside to these kind of deals, mainly for fans, is that these options only get exercised when the player stinks.
Right, but that's a downside that you accept for the reduced AAV. This is not a bad deal, even if he sucks. It won't hamstring the budget for years.

Per source, a trade between the Giants and the Cardinals was nearly finalized in late December that would send SS Tommy Edman to San Francisco. The deal never materialized because the Giants got cold feet in regards to the return for Edman, which included a relief pitcher.

Is a J.D. Davis trade certain?

Decisions, decisions. Can they still keep him and trade someone else instead? With the team history of getting hurt would it be smart to trade him?
:noidea:

They're probably going to have to trade him. He needs regular ABs somewhere and he won't get them here.

Per Baggs:

RHP Landen Roupp, who had a 1.74 ERA in Double-A last season, will pitch at some point after Kyle Harrison on Thursday night against the Dodgers. He's in the mix to fill innings early in the year. Another young option, Mason Black, will start again Friday.

Nothing is “certain”. But I think the good money is on Davis OR Flores getting dealt in the coming weeks. Likely in a package with Bart and probably one of our young arms for a SS or a rotation piece.

Beck’s surgery “went well”. He isn’t expected to throw a ball for at least 8 weeks.

So Flores helped bring over his buddy Soler to take away some of his playing time so he could be traded? The fool.

Giants increasingly seem to be focused on giving the youngsters less chances of playing time. Looks like another somewhat old club with middling playoff prospects. Gotta love the direction and plan FZ is implementing.

Spencer Bivens has officially been added as an NRI? He was already in camp, but he has impressed everyone and is now apparently “in the mix”.

He’d be quite the story if he makes the club

Pretty hash assessment. Don't believe that Flores worked with Soler thinking it would cost him playing time. As a teammate he did what I think should be expected from him.

Working to attract a FA is a very good “good faith” move on a players part. But it does/should not make that player untouchable moving forward.

That said, Flores is one of the leaders on the team, so losing him will hurt. But this team has shown to be pretty “leaderless” the last few years, so maybe jettisoning the current leaders is not a bad general strategy.

I totally agree. I'm just not 100% convinced that we are somewhat 'leaderless' by choice. IMHO I tend to beliieve that FZ plays a much big role in that area then we imagine. Maybe too much involvement at a much lower level than we think.
For me personally... how much of Ksplan's decisions were really FZ influenced ...

We will never know. In truth, we have no idea what Boch REALLY brought to the table. We can only judge him by anecdotes, reports from others, and, at the end of the day, the results he has produced. But what I “know” about Boch is complete Bull shit that I have essentially made up after watching him somewhat closely for a decade(ish).

I have no idea, for sure, how Kap effected the clubhouse. I know that the dude’s personality and mannerisms gave me the willies. By extrapolation, I assume he gave others similar uneasy feelings. Reports tended to support that assumption. But do I KNOW he led to a dysfunctional clubhouse? Absolutely not.

Tracks with what I read about the prognosis. 2 months before he can begin throwing, 2 more months at least before he can join the team. All Star break was best case. Right about the time Ray should be ready. hope he pitches this year.

Barring any changes, there is a good chance that Mason Black cracks the Opening Day rotation. He likely would have been a candidate by midseason anyway, but circumstances might have him in SF sooner than that.

Spider/Harry/Hicks/Black....Lorenzen?
