So, to sum up the 26 man roster: (FA)

SP: Webb, Wood, Cobb, Disco, (Rodon), Junis, Long, Hjelle
RP: Doval, Brebbia, Garcia, Rogers, (Miller), (Alexander), Szapucki
C: Bart, Wynns
IF: Estrada, Crawford, Longoria, Flores, Davis, Villar, (Turner)
OF: Slater, Yaz, (Pedo), Ramos, (Judge)

A couple of holes that could be nicely filled by Judge and Turner. Just sayin...

Slater CF
Longo 3B
Turner SS
Judge RF
Pederson DH
Davis 1B
Yaz LF
Estrada 2B
Bart C

Isn't a bad lineup
Bench: Wynns/Flores/Craw/Ramos/Slater

Webb/Rodon/Cobb/Wood/Disco
Doval/Brebbia/TRog/Harleen/Alexander/Junis/Miller/Long

Wouldn't suck. Probably.

Generally agree but I don't think Villar and Long are quite in the "likely to be on the 23" category. Unfortunately for Villar, the Giants have a few 1st-3rd guys and the combination of Estrada and Flores lock up 2nd. If the Giants make a splash at both 1st and short, Villar is definitely starting 23 at AAA.
Long seemed to get lost in the shuffle before he went down for the year with an injury. I'm not sure he'll survive the dfa shuffle come November. We will see.

As for your minors' list, I think Cotton should get moved up. He earns at least being in the 2nd category (plus I think he is out of options).

To make some fixes on your minors list - Tom is no longer in the organization. He got released a couple of months ago. Mercedes and Diaz will be minor league free agents. Cotton, Dean, Gonzalez, Llovera, Szapucki, Walton and Wynns don't have options left. That leaves them to be possible dfa'd this offseason and become minor league free agents as well.
Is Alvarez Jose Alvarez? Are you expecting him to sign a minor league deal? Will he even be able to pitch in 23?

Thanks for the corrections. I didn't look at the contracts. Alvarez is indeed a FA too.

It seems that Longoria is leaning toward playing next year but the Giants are not automatic in bringing him back . . .

Wow, the free agent options at 3rd base are thin this offseason! Do the Giants make a run at Arenado or exercise the option on Longoria? There isn't anyone else worth signing.

Arenado is too big for us at 3B, imho. We just need a half season filler. 2 season tops.

Cant see them spending money on 3b in free agency, with Shmidtt close. I think they bring Longo back, especially if he's open to renegotiate his contract. Say $7-8M? Perfect placeholder while Casey rakes in AAA

Interesting statement at the end of this article:
"Zaidi will retain overall control of the roster, but the new GM will be his second-in-command and a pivotal piece of the front office."

Sounds like Harris was not the one to blame for doing the DFA churn.

Bags was on M&M this AM. He interviewed Pedo recently, and one of the questions he asked was in regards to his defense, and relatedly, his slovenly appearance (indicating a lack of conditioning). Pedo’s response was essentially, “it is what it is. It ain’t changing”.

Fuck this dude. He doesn’t care. Let some other team carry his worthless carcass.

I would be shocked if the Giants resigned him. (He ha a 1-year contract.) Unless, of course, he signs for $2M (which he won't).

LHG said : " I'm not sure he'll {i.e., Long} survive the dfa shuffle come November. We will see. "

There's not much of a reason to use DFAs until next season, since players are not subject to waiver claims until June or July of 2023. UNLESS, of course, the Giants have a full 40-man roster and need a spot immediately for a signing or trade.

Considering the amount of guys on the 60 day IL (there's more of them than guys hitting free agency), they will need to dfa players. Typically, teams leave one or two spots open on the 40 man roster, too, for free agent signees and/or Rule 5 draftees (but that is not always the case).

Calhoun was acquired in a midseason trade and was once a well-regarded prospect. He went 1-8 in a brief showing with the Giants.

I haven't looked but I do wonder how many of these guys are in line with their career numbers or are they significant one season differences?

I am guessing one of the top 4 will be wearing a Giants' uniform next April:

And if its not one of the top 4, then the Giants need to pass on this group.

15 active locks, 6 forty man locks. Thats 21

Add the six probables and you have 29.

Eleven likely open spots.

2023 Estimated payroll per MLBTR

Brandon Crawford$16M
Alex Wood$12.5M
Anthony DeSclafani$12M
Tommy La Stella$11.5M
Alex Cobb$9M
Wilmer Flores$6.5M

$103 in commitments with 11 spots to fill. A couple will be MLM (Waites? Villar?). A couple might be low cost (LWJ?). Call it five spots filled this way. $110M with six open spots.

Assume about $180M budget (pre COVID). One position player FA and a Rodon replacement (or Rodon!!).

If we go to $200M, 2 position players plus an ace, maybe a reliever.

A boy can dream.
