I wouldn’t be against it. He still has 1 option, so he doesn’t handcuff the 26. If we were to claim him, I would guess that Long or Gonzo would be the corresponding move.
I'm okay with Gonzalez being let go but I wouldn't be surprised if it is Diaz, Long or even one of the new guys added to the 40 man roster (i.e. Beck or Winn).

I have a harder time believing that one of the promotions from this year will be DFA’d. If they thought they were potential R5 players, than they would ABSOLUTELY be DFA claim candidates. Claiming someone has much less obligation than picking someone in the R5 draft.

A thought I had about Gary Sanchez -- he'd be a nice platoon mate with Joc at DH. Dude can hit. Defense is an issue (but he had a nice 2022 behind the dish), but he'd be an offensive upgrade.
Meh, he's 30yo and a C and in decline. That's 38 in other player's years.

I know we need a backup C and I'm fine with us getting him for that. But there's some good reasons nobody else has picked him up.

I am not a HUGE fan of any of the remaining FAs, mainly because I don’t really see any disposable assets left on the 40 (MAYBE Gonzo, but that’s about it). I think the trade market is our best option right now.

I'm not sure who is available on the trade market right now? Off hand, who could you see the Giants getting? Or are you thinking about an NRI on another club being acquired in spring training?

I have no idea who is available. That is WAY outside any of our pay grades. Maybe there isn’t anyone worthwhile available. That doesn’t mean I think Sanchez is a great option. If we were to sign Sanchez, it would essentially be a Gonzo/Sanchez trade, and I am not a huge fan of that trade (it isn’t HORRIBLE, mind you, I just see us giving up on a minor asset for a player who really isn’t that great of an add)

I would rather give up some AA depth piece for another team‘s AA catcher depth piece and invite him to ST as a NRI. We aren’t giving anything but we get a possible BU catcher that we can bail on at a moments notice without much/any cost (And it punts making any hard 40 decisions down the road)

Maybe Wynns clears waivers and sticks around and becomes that option for us.

I think, at this point, your last sentence is the best option. Then they move Jackson to the 60 day IL at the start of spring to make room for Wynns again (or whoever makes the roster that is an NRI). I believe that players can go on the 60 day IL as early as the first official day of spring training.

Or, add Sanchez as an NRI. I think that would be ideal.

That is a possibility.

As far as I can tell, there are still 45 minor league free agent catchers on the market. Of those 45, 17 have some big league experience:
Carlos Perez (212 games, last played in the big leagues in 2018)
Michael Perez (199, 2022)
Ryan Lavarnway (165, 2021)
Zack Collins (150, 2022)
Grayson Greiner (139, 2022)
Tomas Telis (122, 2018)
PJ Higgins (83, 2022)
Tres Barrera (51, 2022)
Jose Briceno (48, 2020)
Beau Taylor (25, 2020)
Webster Rivas (24, 2021)
Nick Ciuffo (21, 2021)
Deivy Grullon (5, 2020)
Erick Castillo (4, 2021)
Taylor Gushue (2, 2021)
Jack Kruger (1, 2021)
Tyler Payne (1, 2021)

Add them the 6 remaining big league free agents (Alfaro, Chirinos, Perez, Plawecki, Sanchez and Torrens), and Wynns, and this is about it available outside of a trade. I don't know if there are any guys from indy ball or foreign leagues with big league experience that are available, so I'll consider this list of 24 catchers what is left to fill that spot behind Bart. Or at least offer NRIs to for spring training.

Per Susan Slusser:

Giants are more likely to add an NRI catcher at this point than a FA

Technically, “adding” an NRI IS adding a FA…. Just inviting Bailey as an NRI isn’t ADDING an NRI.
Is it though? When you add a FA, he's got a contract. When you invite a player to ST, does he also have a contract?

For legal purposes, I assume there is some kind of paperwork. Maybe just an employment agreement, but there has to be SOMETHING.

They still have to sign a minor league contract. Any player who is outside the organization will first sign a minor league deal and the announcement (such as with the Rangers and Littell) will also say that the player has an invitation to big league spring training.
For the players who get invites who are already in the org, they are already under contract so that they don't need to be signed at the point of the invite.

Per FZ just now: major league add unlikely at catcher. Wynns just cleared waivers and the Giants hope to keep him.

Seems like Sanchez and Plawecki are off the table.

Wynns does have the ability to walk as a minor league free agent since he's been outrighted before in his career. It will be interesting to see if he stays. He's got a good shot, right now, with sticking with the club.

I am not a big Wynns fan, but he may be the best option available atm.

Zaidi said the current plan is to start Jackson on the 60-day injured list, which would prevent him from pitching until June while he completes his rehab from Tommy John surgery.

If Jackson has to join the Giants a bit late, Zaidi said it would create an Opening Day vacancy for one of the club’s younger relievers like Cole Waites or even R.J. Dabovich, who would have to pitch his way onto the 40-man roster first.

Although the Giants have been linked to former Yankees catcher Gary Sánchez in recent days, and their current 40-man options behind the plate are down to Joey Bart and Rule 5 draft acquisition Blake Sabol, Zaidi said it’s “really unlikely” that the club will sign another catcher to a major league contract. Instead, Zaidi said he expects to create competition with non-roster invitees. One of them could be Austin Wynns, who cleared waivers and can elect free agency. The Giants are working to re-sign him to a minor league contract.
