Just for the record, these are the middle infield guys whom FZ has acquired and who played either at the big league level or AAA:
Brandon Crawford
Isan Diaz
Thairo Estrada
Tyler Fitzgerald
Wilmer Flores
Shane Matheny
Ford Proctor
Casey Schmitt
David Villar
Donovan Walton
Colton Welker
Will Wilson
Brett Wisely
Picking nits…

Crawford and Wilson were not acquired by FZ.

Edit:

Actually…. He may have made the Wilson trade…

Well, he did retain Crawford by signing him to a 2 year deal. My point being, he's accrued a ton of middle infielders and yet he feels that would be an area that he needs more. I wonder what his thing is about middle infielders.

I understood your point, and it was a good point. I just saw some nits that were screaming to be picked.

Perhaps it's that, when growing up and developing, 2Bs and especially SSs, they are usually the best athletes among the infielders on their teams. Easier to turn a SS into a 3B than the reverse.

Yeah, but do you want a whole AAA affiliate full of light hitting middle infielders (and half the big league roster too)?

Dude, can't a poster be lazy around here?

And, yes, Wilson was acquired under FZ. So only Crawford didn't fit under the word "acquired".

That is the worst-case scenario, yes. But the hope is that one of those seeds grows and yields 30, 60, or 100 fold.

Clearly, I just demonstrated that we can be lazy. But I just suckered you into doing the Wilson research for me.

The 1st 4 are major league free agents. The rest are minor league free agents. When I first made the list, I put down how many games the minor league guys played in the big leagues and the last year that they appeared in the big leagues.

Does FZ know he doesn't play in the middle infield?
Now that I'm thinking about it, I kinda wish this signing was Miguel Sano and not Guzman. Sano is still available and likely to get nothing more than a minor league deal at this point. He's got more upside than Guzman. If we are going to stash a former top prospect at Sacramento as 1st base insurance, I'd think Sano would be the better choice.

FZ loves himself some churn . . .
It kind of makes sense though, right? Shorter term deals are much less risk and they're confident they can find the next guy. The track record indicates they can.

FZ has had some good success on gambling on bouncebacks with short term deals. The opt out, if I am remembering correctly, is a more recent trend among this group. It worked with Rodon (but, long term, did it really?). Off the top of my head, I cannot remember many other opt outs on the team.

I think the TERM “opt-out” is new, but the concept isn’t. It just used to be called a “Player Option”.

I think opt outs were originally for longer term contracts, to give the player a chance to hit the open market earlier in the deal if he thinks he can get more money. The idea of using it in short term deals for guys looking to bounceback is relatively new. It is interesting that teams and/or players don't just go with player option instead. I do wonder what the advantage is to an opt out on a 2 year deal versus a 1 year contract with a player option.
