Luis González and LaMonte Wade Jr. will both be out of options next season and I'm not sure that either one has made a case to remain on the 40-man into next season. They both carry similar utility on the roster in that they are corner outfielders who need to be platooned against right-handed pitching. Neither is above average with the glove so their value is limited.

Judge would cost more along the lines of 40M+ per. Unless he signs a contract that has less money up front.

I think Rodon has put himself into the 30M neighborhood.

The pre-arb guys will be making closer to league min (about 700k?)

Wilmer Flores’ agreement with the #Giants is for 13MM. $6.5MM in both 2023 and 2024, per source. Has mutual option for 2025
This probably just means that FZ grabs about 2 dozen more middle infielders this offseason. Of course, about 14 of them will be dfa'd during the offseason as well.

Scott Alexander's audition (9.1 innings, 2 ER) seems to be going well. The Giants do like carrying several left-handed relievers and Alexander could be one of the options at the start of next season.

For what we have under contract (arb is technically not under contract)…

Alex Cobb (R) - lock rotation
Alex Wood (L) - likely a lock for the rotation, but would be an ideal swing
Anthony Desclafani (R) - likely a lock for the rotation
Sean Hjelle (R) (2) - depth piece, could be lock for rotation later in season

- We need AT LEAST 2 additional starters to confidently fill the opening rotation. Webb is a lock for one of those spots. Harrison, Hjelle, Junis or a FA (Rodon?) could fill the final slot

Sam Delaplane (R) (1) - no clue. He has a grand total of 4 professional appearances since 2019.
Camilo Doval (R) (2) - lock as opening day closer
Mauricio Llovera (R) - probably a part of opening day bully
Sammy Long (L) (1) - could be opening day bully or in Sac rotation. Depends if org wants to develop him as a starter
Yunior Marte (R) (2) - base on how the org loves him, opening day bully. But he should be DFA fodder.
Luis Ortiz (R) (2) - he has looked good, so maybe opening day bully
Randy Rodriguez (R) (2) - minors
Gregory Santos (R) (1) - minors, but will compete for opening day bully
Thomas Szapucki (L) - opening day bully
Cole Waites (R) (2) - minors, but will compete for opening day bully
Alex Young (R) (1) - minors, but will compete for opening day bully

- Add Rogers, Brebbia and maybe Junis and Garcia to this pool. We still need probably 2 additional vets to help Doval and Brebbia lock down the top of this bully. Rogers can probably step back up to be a solid 7th inning guy, but we need another 7th and another 8th. Waites, Santos, Dabovich, Szapucki, Llovera, Long, Ortiz are all in house names competing for the 6 or 7 open slots (assuming only Brebbia and Doval are LOCKS right now)

Joey Bart (1) - lock as opening day catcher
Ford Proctor (2) - minors or DFA
Austin Wynns - DFA candidate

- Wynns HAS to be replaced as the primary back up. Bart is only playing about 65% of the games, so we need a competent back up. Casali is a FA. I think the team will make a serious play to get him back.

Brandon Crawford - lock for opening day roster. His job at SS is in trouble
Wilmer Flores - lock for opening day roster
Luis Gonzalez - DFA candidate
Tommy La Stella - DFA candidate
Jose Rojas (1) - minors
David Villar (2) - opening day 1B?
Jason Vosler (1) - decent shot at opening day roster
Donovan Walton - DFA candidate

- As it stands now, 1B will be covered by Flores, Davis and Villar. I think another bat has to come in at 1st. I doubt that will be Belt, but I wouldn’t rule anything out. 2B is open to an upgrade, but Estrada is good enough, imho, to make 2B lower on the priority list right now. It doesn’t look like either Luciano or Arteaga will stick at SS, so investing in a SS from this strong FA class is not a bad idea. That makes Crawford’s situation very interesting. Maybe he can get some time at 3rd until Schmitt is ready. I think Schmitt gets an outside shot at the job out of camp, but he probably will need to be tested in Sacto first. Outside of Estrada and Davis, no Arb help coming to this group. This is what we got right now.

Austin Dean - DFA candidate
Bryce Johnson (2) - minors
Heliot Ramos (2) - minors
Colton Welker (1) - DFA candidate

- The OF is totally open. Slater, Gonzalez, Yaz, Wade, Calhoun and Brinson are all Arb eligible, and at least half of those will be let go or traded. From the minors, Brown, Ramos, Matos and Luciano (in my mind, this is where he belongs now) will likely be in camp, but really only Brown and Ramos have a chance to make the team out of camp, but I would be surprised if either make it. I figure we will get 2 legit FAs added to this group. Judge is obviously the primary target, but I would be surprised if that actually happened.

I do not claim to have a solid grasp of Rule V eligibility, but I think players from the ‘19 draft are eligible this coming off season. Per RosterResource, here are some of our coming Rule V guys (some of these are guys who were eligible in past seasons as well)…

Carter Aldrete
Tristan Beck
Hunter Bishop
Seth Corry
Tyler Fitzgerald
Joey Marciano
PJ Hilson
Marco Luciano
Luis Matos
Jairo Pomares
Michael Stryffler
Kai-Wei Teng
Will Wilson

Some BIG names on this list. The no brainers are Luciano and Matos. But there are a lot of borderline guys like Wilson, Bishop, Pomares, Marciano, Fitzgerald (probably a no brainer), Stryffler and Beck.

My WAG is…

Luciano
Matos
Beck
Fitzgerald
Stryffler
Marciano
MAYBE Pomares (he is still super raw, but a lower-end team may store him on the 26 because he is such a strong prospect)

this going to be a rough year for us in the Rule V, I think. We will lose some decent players this year.

For the Rule 5 Draft, a player is eligible, if left unprotected, after 4 professional seasons, unless the player was signed before his 19th birthday, then he is eligible for the draft after 5 professional seasons.

Considering the past few years, I would guess that there will be fewer guys protected then expected (and probably a surprise name or two - looking at you Kervin Castro and Yunior Marte).

From the guys I tagged as likely to be protected, who do you think will be exposed? Beck and Stryffler are almost ripe, so unless the org doesnt mind losing them, I think they pretty much have to be protected. Pomares is still a few years away, but it would be too tempting to a bad team to leave him available.

I think some team will take a flyer on Wilson. His defense alone would probably make him a worthy MLB add on many teams. Maybe Bishop could be looked at as well, though less likely.

Looking at the Arb players…

There are 30 players “under contract”, leaving 10 spots for tenders and Rule V protections (I tagged 6 or 7 players needing protection)

Tender Locks

Thairo Estrada (A1)
Tyler Rogers (R) (3) (A1)
Logan Webb (R) (1) (A1) (maybe lock him up long term?)
Mike Yastrzemski (3) (A2) (only based on FO comments this week - I would have put him in the “fence” category without those comments)
John Brebbia (R) (1) (A3)
JD Davis (2) (A3)
Austin Slater (1) (A3)

Fence

LaMonte Wade Jr (A1) (maybe 1 of these 3 OFers will be tendered)
Lewis Brinson (A2) (maybe 1 of these 3 OFers will be tendered)
Willie Calhoun (A2) (maybe 1 of these 3 OFers will be tendered)
Jakob Junis (R) (A3) (edging towards a tender)
Jarlin Garcia (L) (A4) (edging towards a non-tender)

Non-Tender Locks

Zach Littell (R) (A1)

With the 6 (assuming Pomares is left off) protections and these 7 ”locks”, That means we will need to DFA 3 “under contract” players just to break even (before any FA adds).

In summary, we have 30 under contract, 6 or 7 who need protection and 7 who are apparent locks to be tendered. That is 43 players for 40 spots. So who gets the boot from the under contract list?

here are my main contenders…

Marte
Ortiz
Proctor
Wynns
La Stella
Rojas
Walton
Gonzalez
Dean
Welker

I really don’t think losing any of these guys will hurt, so it actually gives us quite a bit of flexibility in signing FA or acquiring players via trade using non-40 players as currency.

They've left Corry exposed last year so I doubt he gets added this time through.

Marciano is not an org favorite so I think he left off the 40 man.

Teng, Beck and Stryffler have tremendous warts. They don't have the pedigree to get protected, in my opinion.

Considering Hilson just started hitting in rookie ball this year, I think they roll the dice and leave him exposed.

I think Luciano is the only lock from this list to be protected but Matos is pretty close to that status.

The other 5 are problematic. Bishop hasn't shown enough to get protected but will FZ feel compelled to add him to make it look like his first draft pick with the Giants wasn't that bad?

Wilson was a "buying a bad contract" trade acquisition. He did well in AA but struggled briefly in AAA, got injured and was sent back to AA when healthy (so all those dfa acquistions could have roster spots in AAA). That may be telling that he won't be added.

Pomares, as you've mentioned, is raw but is young. Could be an add just for the raw talent.

Aldrete had a good season but struggled a bit on his promotion to AA. He doesn't have the prospect pedigree so I would guess he's left off the 40 man roster.

Fitzgerald posted some inconsistent numbers in AA but has some pop for a middle infielder. He may get added.

I would guess that no more than 4 of these guys get added but the FO usually does things differently then I expect. Watch them add 6 or 7.

The first batch of players I listed was just a shortlist. The second group was my actual proposed promotions. I agree that Corry and Aldrete will go unprotected and we are safe doing so. Same with Hilson.

that said, there will probably be 2 guys completely off my radar who they end up protecting. They do it every year.

From Grant Brisbee:

There’s also the idea that Joc Pederson might come back. It sounds ludicrous to bring another player from this year’s failed team back, but he really has had a nice season. A .266/.346/.516 slash line in this offensive environment is stellar. It hasn’t been the straightest line to those numbers, but his OPS is over 1.000 since he returned from the injured list in early August.

I'm on board. More Hebrew!

He feels like this year's Kris Bryant. His numbers are better than the perceived contributions to the team (other than what he did in May). I'm okay with him coming back, as long as the price is reasonable and he is mainly the DH next year.

Bryant was the much more accomplished player, so I don't think its the best comp. Joc has utility as a guy who gets maybe 100 starts or so vs. RHP, some PH duties. I'd expect him to get a lot of DH starts but a fair number of starts in LF too.

I like Joc and what he has contributed this year .... he'd make a great utility piece for a good team. There in lies my concern. We are struggling to be a 500 team this year and it's probable that we will lose our best pitche. SigningJoc won't fix our problems. He will make things a little brighter but we need a concerted effort this off season if we are going to be competitive. Getting Judge and or Turner would be great ... but it loses it's impact if we can't replace Rodan and fix some of the other offensive woes as well as our pen ...
