I found this interesting, from April 23, 2022:

"Conforto underwent right shoulder surgery in mid-April and will not play in 2022, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
Conforto reportedly suffered a shoulder injury in January, though agent Scott Boras declared him fully healthy by late March. However, Conforto required surgery to repair the issue, and he will now be out for the entire 2022 campaign."
Golly gosh! Boras misled everyone about the health status of one of his major clients??? Heaven forfend!

Per Buster Olney, it contains an opt-out after year 1. Presumably, a player opt-out, like Rodon's contract with the G's.

I forgot about that. I wonder why no one picked up on that with the Correa story?

Well, we will get to see whether he adds anything to the team or not. Here's to hoping he exercises his opt out (man, that is a weird thing to say and an ugly inhibitor for a mid season swap, should it be warranted).

Oh, and this deal is pending the physical, which is normally a formality we all ignore. But considering things . . .

Glad to have him but why a 3 year deal on a reliever who struggled last year?
Yeah, not sure I understand this one and for that much. It's not MY money...

Makes me very concerned about the Devers' rumors. They better not further the stink.
Why all the Devers meh (hate is too strong of a word)? The little I’ve seen of him he’s been a beast, and the Red Sox fans I post with on another message board love him. His stats look good to me. Obviously, I don’t want to give up our entire farm, but he’s young and if he signs long term???

I thought Devers would be young enough not to sound the inner LHG alarm. :heh:

My only concern with acquiring Devers would be that we would need to pay a kings ransom for what is, in reality, a rental. He is a full FA after ’23. And he will demand a 10+ year contract in the 300m neighborhood to keep. So what value would actually be gained by emptying the farm for him?

unless we’re confident any signee will be a contributor 3 to 5 years out with a contact that is conducive to building a full team, we should stay away. build for the future, don’t patch a roster for ’23 / ‘24 that won’t be n place in ’25. It’s not that hard to understand

Agreed. For us to get anywhere near a deal for him, it would have to be a sign and trade. No more gambles on rentals. Unless the price was very low.

filo, their responses explain my concerns. Wood and Yaz for Devers? Yes! Luciano, Schmitt and/or Matos for possibly one year of Devers? No!

OK, just floating a test out here for fun and discussion. Please feel free to critique and improve.

What if Boston signed Devers to a 10/275, then traded him to us for Yaz, Doval, and a top-shelf prospect?

Hmm, interesting idea. I do have giving up top shelf prospects but at least the return wouldn't be a one year rental.

Of course, would Boston want to lock him up before hand? I would guess only if the trade was finalized shortly thereafter.

I believe you can "bundle" the contracts (the signing of Devers and the trade agreement) together, so to speak, so that they are contingent upon one another, and it all happens at once.

I BELIEVE (could be completely wrong) that in baseball, newly signed players cannot be traded for 6 months.

Looking at the Conforto deal in regards to WAR…

At 18m per, that is expecting, essentially, 2 WAR per season.

I think that is achievable. but if he has a 2 - 2.5 WAR year in ‘23, what does he do? I would expect he will opt out, even if just to sign a new multi year contract somewhere for less aav. If he puts up 3+ WAR, of course he opts out. If he puts up 1.5 or less, it is a pretty safe bet, I think, that he opts in. Worst case scenario is that he becomes La Stella and gets hurt in ST and provides 0.2 WAR over the 2 year life of the contract.
