I’m sure if the Giants front office is considering it they are looking at every angle possible. They seem to be gun shy now after the Kris Bryant trade didn’t quite work out the way they had hoped.
It was less disastrous than it appeared at the time. Canario is facing serious health issues that may sideline his career and Killian looks good, but not likely a needle mover.

And they were smart enough not to compound the problem by signing him to the contract Colorado got stuck with.

It would cost neither Yaz nor Wood and would start with our top of the top on our farm team
For a 1 year rental?

I expect Boston to ASK for Luciano/Harrison/Schmitt/Matos. But I don’t think (hope?) the Giants would consider that without some assurances that they would be able to sign him long term.

In that situation, I would consider Schmitt or Matos, but would expect someone more along the lines of Doval or Brown. Maybe Bailey.

Their GM is a Tampa Bay guy, they don’t appear to be anywhere close to contending and even if neither of those were true, would you trade one year of an all star player for two league average ones?

I would guess it would be closer to Luciano, /Harrison/Matos and some wildcards. But that is a wag. I just know for sure they wouldn’t want nor take (unless they were throw ins) Wood and Yaz.

Imho, Harrison and Luciano are near untouchable. At least in a deal for a rental in a season where we really aren’t expected to contend.

I would consider going as high as Schmitt or Matos if we had reasonable assurances that we could lock him up long term.

For just the rental and the blind opportunity to MAYBE lock him in long term, I would only go as high as Brown, Doval or Bailey.

Do any of those move the needle enough for Boston to ship their current biggest star out of town? I don’t know. But those are my rough starting points.

We would also have to slow down, take a deep breath, and seriously ask ourselves: "Are we on tilt here in the wake of the Correa failure? Does this smack of desperation?". If so, fold and wait for a better situation.

I think you need different voices in the room just for this purpose. And hopefully those voices are ALLOWED to speak up (looking at what happened in the Correa situation, I think it is safe to say we currently DO have those voices).

But I think Devers is enough of a fit in both directions that it deserves some serious tire-kicking. Devers is super young (‘23 will be his age 26 season) and is one of the better hitters in the game. I don’t know anything about his glove outside of what little has been mentioned here. I am factoring in an assumption that he is a defensive liability. I don’t know if that means Huff/Burrell/Pedo level liability or if that means Flores/Estrada level liability. But for argument, let’s assume he can stay at 3B for the foreseeable future (3 years?) but with an eye at moving him to LF/1B in the long run.

Thinking about catchers, I do wonder if Wynns will be the backup guy. Both Casali and Barnhart came off the market today, and that leaves only 10 catchers avilable through free agency. They are, in alphabetical order:
Jorge Alfaro
Robinson Chirinos
Sandy Leon
Dom Nunez (why does that name sound familiar?)
Brian O'Keefe
Roberto Perez
Kevin Plawecki
Austin Romine
Gary Sanchez
Luis Torrens

My guess for the opening 26, as it sits now. Is the opening day back to 26, or are they doing the 28 thing again? I actually think starting with a 30 for a couple weeks then going to 28 for a couple weeks is a good way to cut down on ST. But assuming an opening 26…

I think Sabol MIGHT get some backup catching duty. If he is any good, maybe he makes Wynns expendable.

La Stella might lose his spot in favor of Wisely or in favor of an additional bully arm (Rogers?).

I would like to see an outside upgrade for one more OF spot. Probably at the expense of Wade.

We don’t have any roster flexibility in the bully, but I really don’t like the looks of that group. If La Stella is jettisoned in favor of an extra arm, than maybe Rogers would be a good add. I don’t see much need for Junis with Wood on the roster, so maybe that is a spot that is ripe for an upgrade.

That right there is another 81-ish win team

Of that 26, only 4 are new to the org this off season (Haniger, Manaea, Stripling, Sabol). That is ridiculous.

Basically those 4 replaced Belt, Longo, Rodon and Garcia.

In a bubble, which group would you rather have?

Haniger
Manaea
Strippling
Sabol

or

Belt
Longo
Rodon
Garcia

That may not be the ceiling projection, but I think it is an optimistic projection.
So losing out on Correa cost us 9+ wins? Asking for a friend...

???

I never got involved in those discussions.

But replacing Correa with Flores/Davis/Villar/La Stella might have cost us 9 games. Seems high, but possible.

Then again, maybe Correa will spend a bulk of the season on the IR and Villar will establish himself as a stud. Or Schmitt will graduate and win ROY.

Who knows. Both of those are legit possibilities. But it is also a legit possibility that Villar will fall on his face and ride the Sacto Express all season and Schmitt will not even get a cuppo.

But I don’t have faith that 22 of the same players from last season will have a considerably better year than last year (collectively). ‘21 was the fluke. ‘22 was closer to reality.

I have the same projected OP roster, except I have LaStella out and Marte in. That is only because there seems to be such love for him despite results.

Why Garcia was jettisoned over Marte, I don't get. Belt, however, may be done. Not sure he should be back in 2023. However, Rodon is, by far, the biggest performer among that group. I may lean for group B.

My subjective top 10 remaining free agent outfielders (guys who've moved to mainly DH duties in 2022 not included):
Michael Conforto
Jurickson Profar
David Peralta
AJ Pollock
Adam Duvall
Kole Calhoun
Tyler Naquin
Jackie Bradley, Jr
Rafael Ortega
Corey Dickerson

Color me shocked if half of these guys get a big league deal in this year's market.

I would be AOK with adding Conforto. I would consider Profar. No thanks on the rest.
