PR can be a minor thing if players know this is how contracts work and aren’t bothered by it. If word gets out from Correa or BoreAss that it was essentially cold feet and they waited a long time narrowing his window for other eligible teams, it is not a minor point at all and will be a sticking point for big time FA’s.

To the giants fans? Probably a moot point once they start winning again.

I agree with the last sentence. Correa wouldn't have turned fans out nor rocketed the G's to the top of division in the next few years

I have been saying for years that we needed to totally suck and get good prospects, but I was called names for mentioning it. After this off season we need to do that for sure.

Hindsight is 20/20.

The "suck then get prospects" route is a total crapshoot. Yes, it can work, as it did for us in the post-Bonds years. But even the NFL and the NBA are crapshoots, and MLB is much, much worse. So should we do that "for sure" as you say - almost certainly no.

We were right there (very competitive) with Correa, then due to circumstances beyond our control, we lost out.

As I've mentioned in a previous post this thread, the voters of this city need to wake up (as in stop being Woke) and get back to somewhere near the mainstream and reality, because people with families or that want to have families (ie, ballplayers) on balance don't want to go to SF, and increasingly, LA. The ballplayers won't say it out loud, but if people in SF have the courage to step out of their echo chamber, they will find out the truth.

The two Barry's came because one grew up here and his Dad was a coach, and the other came from Oakland.

The rumor on Correa was an ankle injury from 2014. Just a rumor and not confirmed.

We would need to have a workout/tryout/physical with him.

If he fails, obviously we don't sign him.

So, in the scenario where he is healthy, I like the idea of looking at ranges and percentages, poker player that I am. The more he plays, the better his oWAR, but the worse his dWAR. So with Conforto, I see:

50% chance of: oWAR of 3.0, dWAR of -1.0. Net WAR of 2.0 = $16mm
50% chance of: oWAR of 1.5, dWAR of -0.5. Net WAR of 1.0 = $8mm

The average here is 1.5 net WAR. equating to $12mm. I think 2/30 is a little high, 2/25 might be more in line. But that difference is starting to get down in the noise.

If he is healthy, we are a better team with him than with no one.
That’s not how WAR works though…you can’t just add oWAR and dWAR together like that

One thing I saw reported about Correa that hasn’t been mentioned here:

Boras was negotiating directly with Greg Johnson , FO not on board. Once the physical came up, the FO shut down a deal it didn’t want to make. Thus, FZ was never on board and this was an internal power struggle.

if this is true, I can’t see the team keeping FZ.

If Johnson was the designated negotiator, then all the FO should have had his back. If he didn't have the backing he should not have engaged.

What we don't know is who or what committee had sign off authority. Could been a minority investor who either got cold feet or was stymied by analysis paralysis and they required a unanimous decision.. Maybe it was a real concern that would have called into question the 13yrs and could not be resolved in Bor-ass' time frame. Doubt we'll ever find out. OTOH if we see a change in management or investors in the next month or so we'll have a pretty good idea

TBH I'm not all that upset. Personally I'd rather have had Swanson (big assumption, don't know if the Giants were on his desired teams or not) and more $$ to shore up the other 8 positions. I don't see Correa as either a Bonds type to drive the fans or a Posey type to be the core leader. Could be wrong

If true, that does not bode well for FZ. And if he didn't want Correa, what was his offseason plan?

It could be he thinks he can build a winner from scraps that others give away on the waiver wire... Well not exactly that but thinks he is the smartest guy in the room. Other than the prove it UFAs (excluding this off seasons guys for now) who has FZ brought in that looked like at least a medium term solution for the roster to be built on.

One of the conspiracy theories I heard on talk radio here (SF) was that the days after signing Correa didn't create ANY uptick in season ticket sales or requests, or any additional activity at the box office so management panicked.

3 AAAA mid infielders and getting 5 NRI bully arms.

And a towel to clean up, of course.

I officially turned off my auto re-up on the MLB app today.

There is that…

Outside of Judge no FA was going to drive tix sale in SF, so that make sense. Naive of the FO it they thought it would

There was a sub-thread on this. You're right, but it's close enough for discussion purposes.

Not saying you’re wrong, but if the above is true, why even bother with the lip service of “we will not be outbid” and “not bound financially” stuff.
