Good for him, but that contract sucks too
Yankees now at an estimated $288mm in payroll for 2023.

Some hefty taxes go with that, but I suspect Steinbrenner DGAF.

Rodon will need to put up 20 WAR to justify that contract. Essentially, 4 AS years like the last two.

It won't happen. He'll be hurt and that contract will be an albatross.

massive overpay by the Yanks.

Misters Becker and Fagen would like a word here.

One of my top 5 favorites "bands".

I liked their early stuff enough, the songs you'd hear on the radio, but then someone played the Pretzel Logic album while we were getting tuned up in the dorm one night. This cut sealed the deal for me - that they had the balls and the talent and the sense of humor and the respect to put this on their album. One of the great covers of all time:

I've seen the Dan live about 20 times, which is pretty incredible as they didn't tour until the late 90s. I love ALL their songs. But yes, Pretzel Logic is tremendous. The hugely popular Rikki, the other title track hit, but one of my top ten Dan songs of all time is Night by Night -- also on this album. Good stuff. And you're correct about ESLTO, great cover and remember there is also the Parker's Band cut -- both homages.

FWIW, Everything Must Go is a tremendous album. If you don't know it, take a listen to G-dwacker, Lunch With Gina, and Things I Miss the Most.

Truly Fagen at his best.

I'm a very amateur rhythm guitarist/vocalist. Love to sing some tunes in the house just to reset my psyche. I was bummed for years that I didn't have the chops to play any of the Dan's music. But recently I minimalized a version of My Old School and it works pretty good. Really helped round out my catalogue.

We named a cat Deacon after Deacon Blues.

I suspect Steinbrenner is pissed he didn't win this year, so he went all out to win in 2023, and damn the out years.

The Spanks are in the 3rd longest WS drought in the history of the franchise. That has to be eating at them

My favorite Dan song of all time is My Old School. Skunk Baxter at his best. Wish I'd had a chance to see him play it live.

Per Spotrac, Giants now at just under $206mm for 2023.

Coincidentally, that is $27mm under the $233mm Competitive Balance Tax threshold, the same AAV that Rodon signed for with the Yankees. Makes me think that that was our FO's AAV offer to Rodon. Maybe the Yankees offered one more year than us?

We still have room to make Swanson our LF. Or Bum our closer. :noidea:

What would it cost to get Benintendi? I figure 20m aav on a short contract, but maybe we can get him at 15m aav on a longer contract. I doubt he would consider us on a shorter “prove it” contract (1/20, 2/40), but he may consider us for a 5/75 or 6/90. He is still young (‘23 will be his age 28 season) but has a pattern of missing about 1/4 of his games.

Is he worth targeting?

Just saw he signed 5/75. So my contract estimation was spot on. I think I would have liked us getting him on that contract, but not sure there was any flirting going on in either direction.

Not sure there are really any other outfielders worth picking up.
Not as a big pickup. Maybe a flyer for Gallo or Myers, but even those don’t really clearly improve the team as-is.

I suspect the entire FA focus moves to the bully market and there may be a trade or two (maybe even a sizable trade).

What are the odds Longo returns? I don’t see how he fits anymore, personally. BC/CC will likely be the primary 3B this year with Schmitt getting some backup time as the season goes on.

This may have been mentioned but Crawford has already been told Correa is the everyday SS, and he will have to play 3B and maybe some 2B. He's never played anywhere else at any level but he's being a pro about it, he will be fine.

How do we know he has been told that? Do we trust the source?

Maybe I'm rationalizing, but it could be argued that AB is basically on the decline, at least with the bat.

A 5/75 for him may have been an overpay, but not by much. Money aside, we would have been a better team with him than with nothing.

Maybe we can deal Jocko for a team needing a DH?

No Conforto, por favor.

Atlanta liked him (for the life of me, I don’t know why)

Gallo to the Twins
11m

not a bad signing, I guess. I picture him as being a lugging DH type, but he has 2 GGs on his shelf. Wtf?

He is a slugger, pure and simple. He doesn’t make much contact, but when he does, ballgofar. In ’22, 163 K in 410 PA. Seriously. That isn’t a typo.
