If we want to target a glove-first center fielder, Michael Taylor of the Royals would definitely check that box. He has one year remaining, so it'd be a rental. There aren't many better defensive CF options in free agency that make sense. Albert Almora Jr./Adam Duvall could be a low-cost CF options as well. It's pretty thin, so the Giants might need to get creative with this.
Yaz has a pretty good glove in CF - do we need to use a roster spot for a no-bat, good-glove guy for this?

This, coming from the board's hardcore advocate for the extreme separation of duties in baseball? May it never be! :suds:

I'd be all for it if there was any reason to think it might work. But his background from college on has him almost exclusively at SS, with just a handful of games at 2B or 3B, and never in the OF. Little league doesn't count.
Same with Craw and CC.

But SS’s tend to be the best athletes with the best baseball instincts (next to catchers, probably). They are the best suited for just being a “baseball player”. My argument the other day about defining the minute differences between the different infield positions was a deep look at the very specific differences. At the end of the day, a “baseball player” can/should be able to adjust.

I really only suggested Swanson because he is probably the best position player left on the FA market. He isn’t a perfect fit for us, and we aren’t a perfect fit for him. I would give us MAYBE a 5% chance of landing him. And that is probably an over estimate.

I have absolutely zero problem with Yaz in center. He isn’t a GGer, but he is solid. Same with Slater. If we can get Kiermaier 2.0, than absolutely go for it. But Kiermaier is/was a generational defensive player. There isn’t one of him out there.

I like the thinking. SS's do tend to be the best athletes in baseball (CF is usually right there, too). He wouldn't have to play CF. LF would be fine.

LF Swanson
CF Yaz
RF Haniger

Slater is a solid #4, and Gonzalez or Wade as the #5.

I would add, though, that changing to a new position would be quite an emotional adjustment, far beyond the baseball skills involved. Shortstops, usually being the best athlete, also usually have quite an ego investment in playing SS. They identify with it. I would think it would be unusual for him to basically permanently accept that he is NOT the SS, and would likely never play there again, at least not with an identifiable regularity.

That's not even a real person though. It's an F Scott Fitzgerald novel character name.
"Dans" to his friends, apparently.

2B Swanson
SS Correa
3B Crawford (Schmitt taking over in ‘24)

That defense would be amazing. And then Estrada could be in the mix for LF/util

Again, this will not happen. I am just talking into my beer.

Hmmm, not sure about Schmitt's mitt. A fielding % of .941 doesn't strike me as all that bueno, even for a 3B:

tzill might have a "field" day with his "Schmittfuckery".

Everything I have heard about Schmitt’s glove is that it is super-elite. I have not seen him play myself, so I can’t argue one way or the other. But I have next to zero faith in fielding percentage for MLBers, let alone minor leaguers. They probably have the HS intern determining errors/hits in many of his games.
