I am embarrassed to say that I completely forgot about Davis. The Giants have a good problem with too many infielders. However, I do wonder if Wade is jettisoned if the Giants get another outfielder.
There's always Luis Gonzalez as the #4 OF. Not a great option at this point, but he's young and he may improve. At least it's a body for now.

Wade's glove doesn't help him. He is expendable, IMHO.

And he could solve the problem at 3rd base!
I have to admit, thinking about our 3B options DID get me thinking about him.

And we are looking for a catcher, and possibly a 1B. If he DID want to come back, he sure would fit. Leadership, if nothing else.

I don't see a spot on the roster for one of Wade or Gonzalez if the Giants get another outfielder. Assuming the Giants sign Conforto or Benintendi (I'd prefer Benintendi), they would probably have Yaz play center and Slater serve as the 4th outfielder.
Both Wade and Gonzalez could be optioned and Wade has more success in the big leagues than Gonzalez. Wouldn't be surprised if Gonzalez gets dfa'd to make room for a new outfielder.

Exactly. Benintendi would be a great fit. Conforto's D es no bueno. And we could toss a coin AFAIC to see if Wade or Gonzalez goes.

I have to admit, I'm banking hard that Conforto's bat comes around quickly and that he is healthy. I'm not sure that is a good gamble.

Agreed. Conforto would come with a likely -1.0 DWAR or worse. Benintendi won a GG in 2021. IMHO, it's not hard choice.

But if it was Conforto or nothing, I'd have to go with Conforto, as long as he is healthy. It's not my money!

Anyone not named Joc Pederson.

Very true.

If Crawford is moved to 3rd base, he'd get the bulk of playing time due to the fact that he hits left handed. Villar, unfortunately, would get the short end of the playing time. I do hope that he gets more playing time at 1st but its possible he starts the year in Sacramento.
While you are probably right, VR might be the best bat currently in the org. I think we NEED his thump in the lineup, so I am pulling for him being the opening day 1B/3B.

Any chance Jocco is the one who gets DFA’d to make room for these adds?

I'd like to see him on the roster come Opening Day and play regularly.

I like him as a DH, vis-a-vis any other option we have. As long as he doesn't put on a fielder's mitt of any kind.

Can you DFA someone to whom you've given a QO? Can the QO be rescinded if we cut him? I'm guessing "no", but I've seen stranger things.

Yes, most of those years were due to issues outside of his control, but your model assumes that won't happen (i.e. injuries or other issues that will reduce playing time) in the next 6 years.

I do disagree about the two reasons it would be an albatross. If there are no WS trophies in those 1st 6 to 8 seasons, his production declines, and his deal is preventing the team from properly rebuilding/building a competitive team, then previous production won't matter at that point. But I do concede I'm getting way ahead of this whole thing. He's a very good player. We should all be excited that he is now a Giant.
Injury is the one caveat for me. But, you either take risks as a ball club in that regard or you never compete.

Given relative health, I think he produces $350M worth of WAR over the next 6-7 years. WS or not, he will have justified the contract. If his production declines at that point, he's already paid for himself so it's house money, aside from he roster spot. His deal in this scenario will not have prevented any team building, as the Giants will have already reaped the benefits.

Now, the goofball fans will whine about the contract as he declines but the fact is the Giants at that point would be deferring payment for value already received.

Correa has back issues so the staying healthy part is a risk. But everything is a risk and you have to take chances to compete. I'm pleased with this signing, and nothing is an "overpay" since the market is what it is. That said, we all know the last few years of the contract will be dead money.
Agreed on all points, but I would term the 'dead money' as financing cost for services already received.

Sure, it is what it is. They said they would play with the big boys, and now they are. Pure Moneyball/Zaidiball isn't enough.

And Matos and McCray. Either could level up.

I've not seen Conforto much...is his D that bad?

Speaking of middle relievers, I don't recall we have mentioned Cole Waites, who pitched to a respectable 3.18 ERA for us last year (albeit in 7 games and 5.2 IP).

He also did well in AA and AAA for us last year as well. Stats point to a phenomenal 16.8K/9 IP in the minors.
