I am not sure I have ever seen Conforto play D (outside of a few games played against the Giants, of course, where I wasn’t really paying close attention to him), but I know his rep is as a bat first, defensive liability.

And Matos and McCray. Either could level up.
And as much as he has fallen on prospect lists, Ramos is still lurking.

And Brown is an older prospect as well, so he may be in the mix.

Speaking of middle relievers, I don't recall we have mentioned Cole Waites, who pitched to a respectable 3.18 ERA for us last year (albeit in 7 games and 5.2 IP).

He also did well in AA and AAA for us last year as well. Stats point to a phenomenal 16.8K/9 IP in the minors.

He ROCKETED through the system last year. I think the team likes him a LOT.

He may not open the season on the roster, but he will certainly be a contributor when all is said and done.

I envision him starting the season in Sacramento and being one of the first called up when a spot is needing to be filled in the bullpen.

How does he get all those K's? Blazing fastball? Nasty slider? Both?

Interesting reliever review from McC Chron:

From the article:

"After looking over the list of major league free agents and using Statcast to filter by slider spin rate (2500-3000 RPM) by all relievers since 2015, I’ve come up with a list of relievers the Giants might be looking at right now (please note: this is by no means exhaustive):"
Already Good
Michael Fulmer (2.2 - age 30)
Adam Ottavino (1.6 - age 37)
Brad Boxberger (1.5 - age 35)
Garrett Richards (1.3 - age 35)
Matt Wisler (1.3 - age 30)
Worth Coaching Up
Josh James
Michael Lorenzen
Trevor May
Jeff Hoffman
Worth Considering
Reyes Moronta
Seth Lugo
Taylor Rogers
I had this posted in the wrong thread. Good review of available relievers.

He left off Sergio Romo. LOL.

Answered my own question again. A RHP, his best pitch is a 97-98 mph fastball, which he appears to be able to tail nicely away from a LHH as needed. He moves his fastball up and down, in and out well. He has a slider which, at least in the videos here, he appears not to control well yet. But, SSS.

Here are his AAA and MLB debuts. Incidentally, Villar makes a nice Belt-like play in the second video to help Waites get out of a jam:

I remember listening to the game the night he made his debut. I thought that the announcers (cannot remember who was calling it that inning) said he got squeezed on a couple of pitches. Now I've seen the evidence.
He did seem a bit nervous on that first outing. Glad he was able to get out of the jam with the help of the defense.

Yeah, a guy making his debut is not gonna get much of a break from the umps.

Looks like good movement on his fastball, and when he gets that slider going, he could be a taller Timmy 2.0, albeit as a reliever.

That secondary pitch will be the key; I trust the org to help him hone it.

Dodgers fans are going to get in a lot of booing over the next 13 years. Count us among the people who believe, had the Dodgers (or Yankees) signed Correa, their fans would have gotten over considering him Public Enemy No. 1 for the sign-stealing scandal pretty quickly: There’s something about watching a guy launch homers for your favorite team that will make you come around on him. But now that Correa’s a Giant? Hoo boy. Booing Correa is going to become as big a tradition in Chavez Ravine as Dodger Dogs. If a Dodgers fan is born today, they are going to get to boo Correa all the way into high school. Rarely has a fanbase been more set up to jeer their chosen villain, for a full decade-plus, as we have here.

This signing just keeps getting better and better. Another take:

Will Correa now become the perennial MVP candidate we’ve been waiting for? Correa has been a fantastic player throughout his career, obviously -- we’re not disparaging the guy. But if you remember when he broke on the scene in 2015, honestly, a lot of us wondered if he was a generational talent on a Hall of Fame track. He was a terrific defender, a potential top-shelf hitter and a charismatic, charming personality, the sort of guy you imagined on the side of a Wheaties box. Injuries have hurt him a little, and the Astros sign-stealing scandal hurt him a lot, but there is a sense that there has been more to get out of him: He has only made two All-Star Games, after all. Well, he’s now the public face of one of baseball’s signature franchises, with a fanbase that, when they love you, will love you forever. He finished fifth in MVP voting last year, the highest he has ever reached. Can he be a superstar who is in that top five on a regular basis?

Really weird that we still haven’t heard the 2 cuts needed to complete this week’s signings. Which of the 3 signings (Manaea, Stripling, Correa) are still not official?

I assume that Manaea and Correa are not officially signed yet so they don't need to make room on the 40 man roster until the signings are official.

If we want to target a glove-first center fielder, Michael Taylor of the Royals would definitely check that box. He has one year remaining, so it'd be a rental. There aren't many better defensive CF options in free agency that make sense. Albert Almora Jr./Adam Duvall could be a low-cost CF options as well. It's pretty thin, so the Giants might need to get creative with this.

Dansby Swanson would make an intriguing CFer…

Just saying…

This, coming from the board's hardcore advocate for the extreme separation of duties in baseball? May it never be! :suds:

I'd be all for it if there was any reason to think it might work. But his background from college on has him almost exclusively at SS, with just a handful of games at 2B or 3B, and never in the OF. Little league doesn't count.
