not a bad signing, I guess. I picture him as being a lugging DH type, but he has 2 GGs on his shelf. Wtf?

He is a slugger, pure and simple. He doesn’t make much contact, but when he does, ballgofar. In ’22, 163 K in 410 PA. Seriously. That isn’t a typo.
He's a great outfielder, all time level cannon

Maybe I'm rationalizing, but it could be argued that AB is basically on the decline, at least with the bat.

A 5/75 for him may have been an overpay, but not by much. Money aside, we would have been a better team with him than with nothing.

Maybe we can deal Jocko for a team needing a DH?

No Conforto, por favor.
Conforto is the only OF left worth getting and he will take a 2 year deal.

We could take a flyer on Adam Duvall. Like Gallo, he K's a lot, but he did win a GG in 2021. We could probably get him fairly cheap, like 1/8.

BTW, Yankees have some roster space to clear. The 40-man is at 39, and they still have to add Kahnle, Judge, Rodon.

FZ watching the waiver wire:

He might be done.

I dunno if I'd risk the roster spot.

Manny Machado is expected to opt-out of his contract after the 2023 season and enter free agency, per @JonHeyman

Machado at 3b, Correa at SS, Ohtani on the bump.

Can we trust BC? Where did he hear it from? I suspect he may be I’ll informed.

Seriously, though…

I hadn’t heard that. That pretty much cements it…

He said he got a call from Kapler and FZ just after signing Correa.

It's a little quick to say he's done. He had a pretty good year in 2021. Sure, he dropped off in 2022, but there may have been a reason (injury, unhappy, personal, etc.).

I like what I have seen from Machado as a person/clubhouse guy since going to SD. I was not a huge fan of his coming out of Bal/LA because of the apparent cancerous nature of his personality, but I would be AOK with adding him now.

His has some speed and is known as a glove man but, yes, the hitting profile suggests DH.

Leave some room for the kids, fellas. How many teams built winners out of a bunch of long term mercenary star players?

I know that this won't give precise information about how 2023 will go, but I thought I'd look at WAR based on players lost (or who are still free agents) versus players gained this offseason:
Players lost:
Jose Alvarez - -0.1
Brandon Belt - 0.3
Jharel Cotton - -0.3
Jarlin Garcia - 0.4
Dominic Leone - 0.5
Zack Littell - 0.1
Mauricio Llovera - 0.1
Evan Longoria - 0.6
Yermin Mercedes - -0.1
Shelby Miller - -0.2
Luis Ortiz - 0.3
Carlos Rodon - 5.4
Jason Vosler - 0.0
Donovan Walton - -0.1
Alex Young - 0.6
Total WAR lost - 7.5

Players gained:
Carlos Correa - 5.4
Mitch Haniger - 1.3
Sean Manaea - -0.9
Ross Stripling - 2.7
Total WAR gained - 8.5

Now I am aware that there are still some transactions to come but, so far, this team isn't that much better than last year's. Returners are going to need to get better (or, in Pederson's case, hit just as well and stay in that DH spot!) and some more additions are going to be needed.

Understanding this is just a very raw quick look…

Bart should have improved season-long production. He was night/day after he came back from his mid season “break” in Sacto. VR should also be improved with a little more job security and the nerves of all his firsts behind him. I think between the two of them alone, we should get AT LEAST an additional 2 WAR.

This also is done before the bully is addressed at all. We should get maybe 3 more bodies in the pen, probably accounting for another 2-3 WAR.

I hope Bart is better this year. He ended the season weakly. I'm not sure if Villar will make the team but I hope he does and I think he at least has a chance.

We'll see what bullpen signings come.

Also as you said before with Joc not putting on a glove that could be worth another 2 WAR.
