Bottom line stats here a little deceiving. 8 of his appearances were in relief, early in 2022.

If my math was correct, in his 24 starts he pitched 125 innings, so 5+ IP/GS.

Not great, but 5 > 4.
So maybe he is the 3 and Manaea is the 4. I like Manaea MUCH better as a 4 than as a 3. But I also like Cobb as a 3 more than I like him as a 2 (but that is a little spoiled of me, granted).

If we can get Rodon (HIGHLY doubtful) and pick up a couple bully arms, than MAYBE this team can do something. We will still need some defensive upgrades, but I think that is somewhat doable.

And we still don’t have a clear 1B. Right now, I think it will be split between Davis, Flores and Villar. That might actually be a decent bat, but the defense is not going to be pretty.

Would it make sense to bring Belt back on 1/7 or something like that? I just don’t trust that he will play enough to make giving him a roster spot worthwhile.

Strip gets 7.5 this year, 17.5 next.

Great phuking move.
Yes, it is.

The salary structure hints that there may be more moves coming. Maybe a big one.

I was thinking much the same. It would all depend on how ready BB9 is. He may be worth a closer look if we make that one more big signing.

And we probably dont need to make that decision right now. Belt is not a high-demand player. He might even be available into ST, so he can be a safety valve move.

Villar looks to have an OK glove (0.2 dWAR in 1/3 of a season), and hit to an OPS of .787 (1.1 oWAR). And he's only 26 by Opening Day.

I have somewhat high hopes for Villar. I think he CAN develop into an adequate 1B. His bat looks to have decent promise.

So if you start Stripling, we then get Wood?

What?

He said they would pitch in the same game. Did I misunderstand his point?
Actually, it was quite good, given the material. Quite the Dad joke, but all in all, well played.

Just throwing this out there:

Can someone explain this excerpt?

"Since the Judge non-signing, they’ve agreed to some smaller deals for Sean Manaea and Ross Stripling, bringing their 2023 payroll up to $164MM, per Roster Resource. It’s unclear how far they want to push spending this offseason, but they are still sitting on a competitive balance tax figure of $180MM, leaving them over $50MM of room before reaching the lowest luxury tax barrier of $233MM."

What is the difference, in words, between the current 2023 payroll of $164mm and the "competitive balance tax figure" of $180mm? What is that $16mm difference?

Answered my own question.

"Teams have two different payrolls each year. Their actual club payroll, which is the real dollars paid out in salary, and their CBT payroll. The CBT payroll is calculated using the average annual value of each player's contract. Manny Machado's 10-year, $300 million contract counts as $30 million against the CBT payroll, though his actual salary is $32 million this year."

So, according to this, we have about $53mm of cap room before getting taxed, not $70mm as we previously thought.

In other words, backloading a deal doesn't make a difference under the luxury tax rules. Stripling's deal doesn't make it more likely that the Giants are trying to make room for someone else.

Six prime years, 4 good years, 3 mediocre/bad years.

We need to get 35-40 WAR out of this contract.

As we sit now…

Webb
Cobb
Stipling
Manaea
Desclefani

Doval

Bart
Villar/Flores/Davis/Sabol
Estrada
Correa/Crawford
Correa/Crawford

Haniger
Yaz/Slater
Wade/Yaz

We still need another OF and maybe a backup catcher. I am not thrilled with our current 1B situation, but we have a lot of decent options. One of them may pan out.

Wow, 13 years. That seems incredibly long for a contract. I get the feeling that it will be fun for the first half of the deal.
