Yeah, he does remind me of Beck.

I'm not real excited about either Benintendi or Bassitt. Both seem like their hype are bigger than their production, and in Bassitt's case, he wants a 4 year deal that will end when he is 38 years old. How many more good years does he have?

Re Bassitt, from MLBTR:

"The TJ surgery and subsequent recovery kept Bassitt off a big league mound for over two full years, from April 2016 to June 2018. As such, an argument could be made that Bassitt’s arm is actually pretty fresh for a pitcher of his age, given that he has only 737 1/3 Major League innings on his resume."
Benintendi is a LHH with no real HR power, but he did hit to an OPS+ of 120 in 2022. As such, he may be well suited to our park. He has cut down on his K's, and won a GG in 2021. And he'll only be 28 on opening day.

I'm not dying on these hills, just being an advocate here. If we want to sign Correa, that means we intend to win. If we intend to win, we need to sign some other decent players. Bassitt and Benintendi may not be perfect, but they are about the best that is left.

Are the Giants just getting out bid? Do players not want to play at the Basin? Do they not want to play for FZ or Kap? Are the California taxes that much more dubious than other states’ taxes? Is this FO intentionally punting on FA for, well, “reasons”?

This is perplexing.

I'm not necessarily against either player. They aren't the types of signings that say "we have to sign SOMEone for the sake of the fans". Its just that they, in my opinion, aren't enough to make the team clear contenders (especially if Correa lands elsewhere, he may be the linchpin). Yes, Benintendi is good but is he good on his own to warrant him being signed alone? Bassitt is good but will he be good in 4 years, regardless of the TJ surgery (heck, isn't that a red flag in and of itself? Do TJ surgeries really make arms more "fresh" or "fragile"?)?
If Correa is on board, then I'm more likely to be okay with picking these guys up. If not, they are two more Hanigers. Marginal improvements but not sure they are enough to contend. However, I need to at least acknowledge that the level needed to make the playoffs is lower than I'm used to so I may be using too high a standard.

FZ, to the press, after big name players signed elsewhere:

Agreed. But maybe it's a Catch-22 situation: Correa won't sign with us until he sees more of a commitment from the FO to building a winner (ie, sign decent supporting players like Bassitt and Benintendi), and the FO won't sign decent supporting players like Bassitt and Benintendi until they sign Correa.

I do wonder if Haniger was signed when he was to help Judge choose SF ("see, we are getting other good players to build a winner"). I would guess that signing players like that can help sway a decision, but, in the end, money will probably play the biggest role.

I think they were all in on Judge, and missing out on him has blown up all their plans. It kinda looks like they have no direction now.

The optimist in me says that even without Judge or Correa or any headline FA signing, if we can parlay a couple reasonable outcomes, we could be back in contention:

Desclafini returns to form.

Crawford bounces back.

Haniger pans out to expectation.

We pick up at least one good setup guy.

Bart continues to improve.

Maybe get another playable OF.

Not asking for any of these to become All-stars. Just don't be a hole.

We signed Manaea, 2/25.

Hopefully there was a good reason for his dropoff last year.

Good to see the FO hasn't entirely given up yet.
