To take it a step further, since we didn't get Judge, the FO might look to tank this year. Paper it over with guys like Haniger and maybe a second- or third-tier SP so it looks like we tried so they can sell some tickets, but do a de facto tank.
Conversation, two days ago:

FZ: "And we are about to sign Judge too! Should be announced soon. After that, we'll get Correa because he wants in if we have Judge. Then Rodon will surely return because he sees we are serious about winning!"

Haniger: "Okay, I'm in! I'll just sign this 3 year contract and . . . there you go!" (hands FZ contract)

Overheard on the TV in the background: "Breaking news! Yankees just announced that Judge is returning on a 9 year deal!"

Haniger: "Hey, I thought you said you were going to sign Judge! FZ?!?! FZ?!?!"

**cloud of dust in room from FZ's quick disappearing act.**

Nimmo back to Mets 8/162.

HUUUUGE overpay IMO. He was projected at 5/100.

Seems like all the contracts are overpays this time, which means they aren't really

My approximate top 10 remaining free agent outfielders:
Andrew Benintendi
Michael Conforto
Wil Myers
Kevin Kiermaier
Jurickson Profar
Tyler Naquin
Garret Hampson
Joey Gallo
AJ Pollock
Adam Duvall

At this point in time, I'm leaning toward sticking with Haniger and see how the internal options play out.

Damn, wanted Nimmo, but hell naw at that price lol. Wanted him and Trea T, but sounded like there was never any way Turner wanted to stay on west coast (reading between the lines) and Nimmo’s contract is Jeff Samgarbagejizza redux. Bad the day it was written and signed.

I appreciate that perspective. I generally think a player is "worth" whatever someone will pay.

On this one, though, there is NO WAY the Mutts get fair value for that salary. 20+ WAR over the life of it for a guy who can't stay healthy?

Sheesh.

The Giants will have 5 players who are out of options in 2023:
IF Thairo Estrada
OF LaMonte Wade Jr.
C Austin Wynns
P Thomas Szapucki
P Miguel Yajure

Players can be granted a 4th option, which is usually awarded in/around spring training, due to injury. Szapucki could be a candidate for that given that he missed considerable time in '21.

As the 40 man roster is currently constructed, I think all but Yajure have a strong chance to make the team out of spring training. I know the Giants are looking into getting another catcher. If they sign one to a big league deal, either Wynns or Yajure will be likely removed from the 40 man roster.

It will probably take 2 or 3 free agent relievers added to make it likely that Szapucki does not survive spring training. However, FZ does pilot this ship so who knows what will happen with Szapucki.

I'm going to venture a guess that Rodon doesn't sign with someone until the early part of spring training, given that he is a Boras client.

Kiermaier signed with Blue Jays (not that I wanted the Giants to get him but he was probably top 5 among remaining free agents). My updated top 10 remaining free agent outfielders:
Andrew Benintendi
Michael Conforto
Wil Myers
Jurickson Profar
Tyler Naquin
Garret Hampson
Joey Gallo
AJ Pollock
Adam Duvall
David Peralta

Is there any way this off-season can be salvaged? If so, how?

Correa
Senga
Myers

Those are all realistic gets. If we get those 3, is it possible to call this a successful off season? Rodon is too much of a stretch, imho, to expect.

If we make a trade for a player like Reynolds, what would be the cost? Luciano? Matos? Harrison? Schmidt? I think it would cost AT LEAST one of those.

Myers isn't necessarily a large upgrade, in my opinion. Correa, however, is significant. Maybe Senga as well. But will they be enough to warrant those pickups.

Reynolds is a hard no for me. He's got a good bat but is a bit of a liability defensively (so I hear, at least) and the Pirates don't need to trade him. They have 3 more seasons of control and so they need to be overwhelmed in a trade offer. It would probably cost at least two of Luciano, Matos, Harrison and Schmitt to get him. Having an outfield of Haniger and Reynolds, with Pederson lurking as the DH, is not going to help the defensive deficiencies on this team.

scratch Myers and substitute Rogers and I think we win the offseason.

Senga to Mets 5/75

FZ must not have been too keen on him, because that seems like a fair price

Ugh. Options are dwindling and getting less attractive. Maybe the FO is confident that Desclafini can return to 2021 form?
