Rays acquired RHP’s Adrian Sampson and Manuel Rodríguez and international bonus pool money from the Cubs for THP Josh Roberson.
Sampson is the most likely to contribute for the Rays over the final two months as he’s made 72 appearances (44 starts) in the big leagues dating back to 2016. The 31-year-old righty hasn’t pitched in the majors this season, and missed a significant portion of the year due to knee surgery, but could wind up helping down the home stretch.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports the Padres are finalizing a trade to acquire left-hander Rich Hill and first baseman Ji Man Choi from the Pirates.
The Pirates will receive left-hander Jackson Wolf, first baseman Alfonso Rivas and outfielder Estuar Suero in the deal. The move shores up San Diego’s starting rotation depth, while also giving them a quality option at designated hitter as they look to make a push for a playoff spot over the final two months of the regular season. It’s a great landing spot for Hill, who will be heading to one of the better pitcher’s parks in baseball of late.

Astros OF prospect Drew Gilbert has been promoted from High-A Asheville to Double-A Corpus Christi.
Gilbert, the top prospect in the Astros’ system, gets the call to the upper minors after slashing .361/.421/.686 with 15 extra-base hits (six homers) in just 21 games this season for High-A Asheville. The 22-year-old first-round selection from the 2022 MLB Draft might be ready to make an impact in the majors next year, but it’s impossible to rule out a potential late-season cameo.
