if we got rid of veterans then why would we sign Darvish and Cobb? of course i would gladly give Choo and Cash but who would take him? DeShields i would move to LF if we sign or trade for a CF
Because there is life beyond 2018. I am assuming Darvish and Cobb would be here several years. The veterans I had in mind would not be.

No better place to start than pitching. Your point is well made and understood.

Let's see we hope Choo gets traded. Hamels and Belted probably are gone after 2018. Anyone else

From mlbtraderumors.com.

The Phillies are known to be looking for pitching, though NBCSports.com Philadelphia’s Jim Salisbury writes that the team could wait until the July trade deadline to make a big addition to the rotation. Asking prices could be lower for some pitchers by July, or the Phillies could have a better idea of what young players they’d be more comfortable giving up in a trade. Interestingly, Salisbury notes that Cole Hamels could be targeted by the Phils if the Rangers fall out of contention, as both Hamels and the Phillies would have interest in the 2008 World Series hero returning to Philadelphia.

Also:

  • Nick Williams seems to be the likeliest of the Phillies outfielders to be used as a trade chip, David Murphy of the Philadelphia Daily News writes, though there’s also a case to be made for the team to move one of Odubel Herrera or Aaron Altherr. (Rhys Hoskins almost surely is staying put.) Given that all three outfielders, and even Hoskins, have their share of question marks and can’t be entirely counted on as sure things going into 2018, Murphy notes that the Phillies might indeed stick to their stated plan of keeping all four players and juggling playing time based on matchups and situations. Plans could change, of course, if the Phils are required to include one of the players in a trade for a young and controllable starting pitcher.

Rangers NY resolutions
1. Sign Yu- despite WS mishap and obvious contract leverage. To me he is a Ranger and any overcome adversity the franchise has had if led by him would be the sweetest victory imaginable. Let's keep our own
2. Develop pitching in minors.
3 Premium defense in CF. premium speed, routes, arm and can climb the wall- has to make up for deficiencies in COF
4. Better hitting IQ. Less strikeouts, know when contact is needed
5. Legitimate closer. Need guys to miss bats
6. Never make a trade that loses a guy like Brinson.
7. Offer me an opening day ticket without forcing me to buy black age
8. See 1-7
9. Less stupid injuries by players such as Dutch and Marteeeen
10. _________(fill in blank)

We are strong towards the top of Jamey's list, but after #6 is gets rather shaky, and especially after #10. I do have hope that Whatley, Ibanez, Palumbo, Matuella, Choplick and Martin can move up that list significantly this coming season.

Of those top 6 I wouldn't be surprised if in three to five years that we don't rank those guys differently.

I should have said I think we will rank them significantly differently in 3-5 years than they are ranked presently. I really expect the most out of Ragans, Crouse, and Seise.

Yes, I would hope Mauella is in the bigs if health works out. Not following last statement. Really hope Guzman is a legit surprise and eventual long term 1st baseman

Ive been checking this thread roughly once a week since the offseason started and it seems like I always leave disappointed because of the lack of moves and the lack of a defined / clear direction for this baseball team.

Maybe JD is just keeping his powder dry until we move to the new stadium. Hell I don’t know what JD has been doing the last few offseasons. I guess the Choo, Elvis, Fielder, Andrus contracts have us hamstrung?

JD is preparing his Jedi moves. That is what he is doing.
