harrison has had a good to very good may and june,
terrible april and july.

he hustles and plays well in the field and has energized the team when they needed it.

is he the pirates MVP, quite possibly with cutch. is he an all-star, others in the NL are having better years.

but if they had an all-star selection specifically for best utility/role/all-purpose player, yes harrison would be that person altho i have no idea if other teams have a player like this.

Pick a position for Harrision, 2b, 3b, OF, there are better players at each position than him. Then the fact he has never been even an average player till this year, and add to that he isn't even qualified for the batting title because of too few ab's.

If the point is to reward the players who are having a good year thus far, where is Anthony Rendon? He has slightly better numbers than Harrison this year, has 100 more ab's, plays the same positions (2B/3B, and has a better track record.

His case is not so much better than Harrison's that it makes it moronic to include the guy on the team. It's *slightly* better. Harrison has a better average, his OBP is 5 points lower, and Rendon has better slugging numbers.

We're only 6 games into July, and he has hits in 4 of them. I'm not some huge JHay fan, but he does deserve this. The stats back it up, and the way he plays backs it up.

I don't think Harrison is a completely unjustified selection, but I do think Rendon is having the better season, has the better track record, and is considerably more likely to keep performing and improving than is Harrison. Harrison does have the Ben Zobrist everyday utility man thing going for him, though.

Agree to disagree, and really the it's stupid to base all star selections on half a season anyway, since we don't base anything off of second havles by extension, makes no sense.

And 100 more ab's from Rendon, that isn't nothing considering Harrision 100 ab's ago had a better line than Jose Abreu does right now, and now 100 ab's later, he's down 30 points in wRC+.

Apparently, we traded away Dickerson to the Indians for a player to be named later or cash. I don't fully understand that move, though, I guess we have a lot of outfield depth. Perhaps someone is due for a call-up, or we're looking to set up another move? :noidea:

i am not sure why we don't package a number of players that have some potential with a A-/B+ prospect or 2 for that position player we really need to land.

seems like throwing dickerson away doesn't make sense and could have been an important chip in a larger package. we have people hitting and most teams don't.
we have viable bats at AAA that others might be interested in, not as the primary parts of a deal, but add ins for depth or role players to go along with the key player or 2 in a deal.

In addition to opt out clauses, some NRI types have clauses about another team wanting them on their 25 man roster and then its either you put em on 25man roster or trade them to the team that will.

That is how we got Grilli:

Jason Grilli, who is pitching for Philadelphia's Triple-A team, will be in the big leagues within a few days, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. The 34-year-old has received at least one Major League offer, which means the Phillies have to promote him or let him leave as a free agent. Grilli has drawn interest from Pittsburgh now that he appears to have recovered from the right knee operation that sidelined him in 2010.

thanks steel parrot,
learn something everyday.
still, i guess that is why we need to be in significant discussions with teams, including these quick-to-go guys as part of it so we can get something more out of the value.
might not work every time, but should be part of the strategy.

I don't believe Dickerson was on that type of deal, it seems more like a courtesy to send him to Cleveland since they can use him and we can't. He is a veteran that was brought in to mentor Gregory Polanco, he is now in the majors and Dickerson is having a good deal. Since he did everything that was asked of him and then some Neil probably threw him a solid and let him go get on a major league roster. I don't fault him for letting him go like this, it is the decent thing to do.

Either way, we didn't have a use for Dickerson, and NH and his contacts in Cleveland have been doing these type of deals for a few years both ways.

So lame, you'd think Cole would be a little more durable than this. Guess we don't have to figure out the whole Worley/Locke situation just yet.

Maybe this time Huntington will actually send him on a rehab assignment.

As far as the Locke Worley situation goes, at the rate pitchers are getting injured, we will be past the point of September call-ups before we would even potentially have to worry, thus, no worry.

As for Cole, this seems more like a snowball injury than anything else to me. Tired shoulder so he overcompensates and hurts his core. Let him rest until it doesn't hurt at all, then go to rehab and work himself back up.

Agreed, I think this was just a matter of him trying to rush back. For now, we have guys performing, and he should focus on being completely healthy for the stretch run.

Thank God we have Ernesto Frieri. This is two games in a row that we have lost with our two best pitchers out of the game. Last night we pulled Watson after 5 pitches for no apparent reason, tonight Frieri gives it up. Neither night did Melancon pitch. Saving the "closer" for a closing situation only works if you make it to a closing situation.

Not that I am knocking Hurdle, but just wondering why he wouldn't have Melancon pitch the 9th.

The meaning of Ernesto Frieri: that act of wishing that you still had Jason Grilli.
