I miss Craig Gentry

Good heavens YESSSSSSSS.

We're considering keeping DeShields when we could have had Gentry. How long ya need to think about that one?

But hey, at the time, I was on board with the parting and what we got in return. My bad perhaps.

I never wanted to see Craig go. He was still cheap and you knew exactly what kind of player he was and the production he would bring, in a backup/platoon CF role behind Leonys. That said I had lots of hopes after the trade was done that Choice's ceiling as a prospect was pretty high. My opinion has changed some on Michael since. Maybe he gets it together in RR and it translates to the bigs eventually but thats yet to be determined.

Gentry was great on defense and made contact much of the time. I think what interested us all is the power potential from Choice. But as we all saw he really struggled at the plate but even more surprising was how mediocre he was on defense.

Gentry would also take a fastball to the head to get on base.

Chi Chi needs more time in the minors, but I think his performance this spring made that decision one of the toughest in camp even if it was the right thing to do.

I still applaud JD for the Choice/Gentry trade. Sometimes good decisions have bad results in sports.

I agree. The results of the trade do not take away from the fact that it looked like an astute decision at the time. Nobody could've known that Choice would bomb like he did. How much of that was him shitting the bed, and how much was the fact that he was relegated to the end of the bench, I don't know.

Does Tepesch need a good start today to stay in the mix for the rotation?

The way I see it, the give spot is up for grabs for Tepesch, Martinez, Raunado, and Bonilla. Right now Martinez gets the nod, but I'd say if Tepesch shows progress today he stays in contention.

Just spitballing here, but I'd feel more comfortable assigning Bonilla to the pen, as a go-to guy for 2-3 innings if/when the situation presents itself. I just don't see him as a guy who will give you a 6 or 7 inning start.

I'd tend to agree. We need help in the pen, and Bonilla is a solid set up arm who can bridge the gap from the 6th to the 8th inning. I'd say the Martinez has the bead on the spot, but a solid outing from Tepesch today would definitely get him in the conversation, which is better if he does because it keeps pushing Martinez.

Our bullpen as it sets now looks like this IMO.

Feliz
Scheppers
Bonilla
Mendez
Ohlendorf
Claudio
Tolleson

I could also see Kela in there but I have a hunch he'll start the season in AAA.

Ya know.....I distinctly remember asking this about Craig, "Is it just me, or does he seem to make things happen when he's in the game?" way back when.

But I'm not gonna crayfish one iota by saying I was opposed to his trade for Choice.

Classic.....Be careful what you ask for I guess.

Out of all these 4 guys I feel Martinez has the mental makeup needed to handle the grind.

And I've lost some faith in Tepesch for sure. Is this just me?

Let's see what Tepesch does today.

Nope. They've given him a lot of chances to seize a spot in the rotation and he just doesn't seem to be able to fully grab it. Flashes of a good pitcher, but no consistency.

I would rather keep Bonilla starting for now. We might need him eventually. Besides, last year he did fairly well in the few starts that he got.

Gameday says Cowgill grounded out via bunt, Odor to Tepesch. Now that play I'd like to have seen.

It wasn't to Tepesch. It was to Fielder. And fielder gave the shift a giant middle finger and laid down a bunt for a hit.
