Apparently so.

It's pretty mind boggling to me.

It is mind boggling and has actually become humorous. I always hear the argument about how being a hard throwing lefty will get you a lot of chances, but I sure can't think of another one who has had so many chances with one organization with as little success as he has had. He even has had terrible numbers in many of his minor league seasons.

That's one of the things we'd batted around.

It may be contract to contract. Just wasn't sure if there was any "hard fact" to how it's handled.
I would be very surprised if a team would have to continue to pay a contract when someone dies.

Guys with his amount of service time are on a year to year basis anyway. Even if he had just signed a 5 year contract I don't think the club would have to pay any longer though.

I like his bat a lot. But catching is the one position where I want to concentrate more on defense, framing, calling a decent game, etc. more than bat.

Remember, Darvish didn't like pitching to Chirinos last year, and Jimenez was his personal catcher this year and Soto was the year before.

From what I've read, Gattis is damn near a liability behind the plate.

I tend to think that the "personal catcher" thing is a bit overblown. Yu's first 3 games where he didn't allow any earned runs last year were with JP catching. His last 3 games where he didn't allow any earned runs was with Gimenez, but two of his worst games of the year were with Gimenez catching as well. I think when Yu is on he could do very well with just about any catcher in there.

It's not a matter of whether anyone else can catch him. He doesn't like pitching to Chirinos because he doesn't like how he calls the games.

Phil Coke says hi.

Oh, hello Phil. I see you come way short of matching Kirkman for consecutive years with the same organization. You only had 7 compared to Michael's 11. You also had much better numbers in the minors than Michael did. 4 of your 6 seasons in the minors were actually pretty good. Poor Michael had 6 terrible years in the minors out of 10 with 3 being good years and one mediocre one.

Thanks for the greeting though.

How many opportunities did they get to work together though? This time they get a ST to get acclimated to each other.

Was just a general statement about a bad lefty continuing to get opportunities when they shouldn't.

I am sure Detroit fans have the same feeling of doom when Coke comes into the game as we do when Kirkland comes in.

@jonmorosi: Orioles, Rangers, and Padres among the teams still involved in the trade market for Braves outfielder Justin Upton.

Jon Morosi@jonmorosi [ame=""]5m5 minutes ago[/ame] Sources: Rangers have spoken with Dodgers about Matt Kemp, joining Padres, Orioles, Mariners among Kemp suitors.
