Also keep in mind who is agent is. SB is notorious for strongly advising/recommending his agent to take the highest price no matter what. If I recall, johnny damon went to the yankees or the redsox or some team im not sure, but when he did he took $750,000 more to go to a new team then to stay with his old team. The man is a greedy bastard

PLZ elaborate on 3). Seems to me they would make a difference or there would be no reason to acquire them.

Of course they make a win-loss difference. That was my point, which is often forgotten and lost in the shuffle when people celebrate their rivals overpaying top talent. People focus on how Cano is getting grossly overpaid, but they forget the most simple of facts- that the M's are now a better ball club because of him. Maybe that contract bites them in the ass down the line. But right here, right now in terms of helping or hurting the Rangers' playoff chances, it can only hurt them.

With the way the fans have supported this team over the last few years, I just feel like that the payroll should be higher than it is. The owners don't seem like they would tell JD no if it makes the team better. I see a window here within the next 4-5 years, and I know others feel this way. If we're going to acquire a bat and Tanaka then great, but passing on every player while making a killing doesn't sit well with me.

You've been wise and prudent then. Some just few the grass is greener and makes the move and move the move sucks.

If I'm Choo's agent and he wanted to sign in Texas for say, $20,000,000 less than Seattle offered, I might counter with this: "Based on my percentage you've just cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars and all I did was do my job well. You going to make up my lost wages here?"

At which point, if I'm Choo, I say "you work for me. Period. If you don't like it then I will find another agent who will gladly accept commission on a multi-million dollar deal".

That's putting it mildly. How did the LAD meeting go? Both teams to pursue it further?

I'm not sure. JD is keeping kemp very close to the chest. The last thing we'd want is for us to be close to getting kemp and then another desperate team to swoop in

Didn't Weaver buck the system and signed with the Angels? Wasn't his agent Boras?

I agree. Yeah, nobody wants to turn down tons of money. But there comes a point when the difference between salary A and salary B shouldn't matter as much because both salaries are more than one person can spend. Which salary is better, $500 million or $600 million? They're the same essentially because no person should ever approach spending through that much. Offer me $50 million to play for Texas or $70 million to play for Oakland, I take Texas every day of the week.

I think leaving $20 million on the table is much easier said than done. I know you were being facetious about $100 million because that would sway Ghandi's vote.

Just to put this out there, the site used to not handle threads with 10k posts very well. I'll check, but I may have to lock this one and create a new one soon.

If we do, I'll copy the last 5 pages before 10k to start the new thread :suds:

Seems like I remember a few years back that the Players Union advises the player to get as much from whomever regardless as well. Anyone remember reading this? It's been quite a while ago.

But that will effect our pursuit of Choo, wouldn't it? If JD is sure he can entice the Dodgers in a trade for Kemp don't offer Choo a contract he may actually except. Tough call.

Yes, but I think its a little different. Its two different things signing a contract extension early with your present team and then testing the FA market. I bet boras tells them "listen, if you like where you are at, then I can work on an extension for you. If you want to make the most money possible and talk to whoever you want to, then we're all in together."
