I understand why JD does not want to give crazy contracts that cripple a franchise for years like the Angels have done. Also know why he does not want to give up good pitching to get a power bat such as Trumbo. Further understand he does not want to give away our best prospects and deplete the farm. So what does he do? What other options does he have? I believe his approach has been correct in protecting the franchise from disaster but have no idea how many other ways he has to make the team better.

Signing Cruz to a reasonable contract seems the easy way to do this. If Trumbo does indeed go to Arizona, as the tweets have been saying, that leaves Ariz. out on Choo/Cruz. Their suitors are dwindling.

Seems like his strategy is wait out the free spending early part of FA and hope to sign a guy once the market lowers the price...like the Beltre signing. That occasionally works, but often times you're left holding the bag.

The reason the Angels are in such bad shape is bc they not only signed crazy albatross contracts but they also have made dumb trades that gutted the farm of top MLB level talent. Signing a few big FAs won't cripple a team if you can place young talented guys earning minimum salaries. It also doesn't help that the big money players have grossly underperformed.

But even Cruz is wanting more than JD is going to pay. My hope is Cruz will not be picked up at his price and be forced to lower his expectations.

He'll come down, buddy. So will Choo. Enough for Texas to bite? I kinda doubt it for Choo. Detroit seems to be out of the mix, same with Arizona (if they get Trumbo). Yankees got their man and we all know about LAD. IMO that leaves us and Seattle. Seattle getting Choo. It's not sexy but it'll do for now. Just hope Martin or Elvis develop into good get on base guys.

Looks like the Trumbo trade going down.

ESPN's Jayson Stark tweets that the Rays are interested in Mitch Moreland of the Rangers and notes that a swap of Moreland and Matt Joyce is a possibility. That scenario hasn't gained much traction to this point, however, according to Stark

No thanks.

I said yesterday that I hope they trade Trumbo because Dipoto will get fleeced one way or another. If this trade happens then the Angels got better.

The Angels traded Skaggs to the D-Backs in the first place. They are giving up something of value to get back a dude they previously dealt. Good job there LAA.

I was afraid of that. I guess that leaves Garza out. What was his asking price?

Big time no thanks. For all of his faults, Mitch is still a 20-HR guy with a very solid glove at 1B. No need to marginalize that by trading for a platoon OF with less power and a weaker glove.

JD has told Scott Boras that they are simply too far apart at this point. Unless they lower their price significantly then we're out of the choo race.

JD met with ned coletti again today. That's honestly all I have. I guess the day is still young, but I was certain there would be more activity up to this point

Thanks for checking in Terps. Thought any Kemp deal will take its time. If Choo is announcing today, it's going to be Seattle, I presume. Any movement on Cruz?

Here's some slightly better news. JD is gonna be in on tanaka if he is posted. He thinks that he can use success from darvish as a negotiating ploy. He doesnt think he will cost as much as darvish either. The hope is that he lands tanaka and is able to trade one of his left handed starters for a lineup impacting package somewhere down the road
