Choice needs to be in AAA if he's not playing every day.

You're probably right. Just like Profar should have been last year. But the Rangers may think he's ready to handle this, and we don't really have any idea where this guy is mentally to cope with handling the position.

I do know he's blazed through the minors with impressive offensive numbers along the way. Would he be better off in AAA playing, probably. It still might not happen.

IMO, what they did with Profar last season was poor judgement and counter-productive to his growth as a player. The Rangers could/should have addressed this without putting Profar in this position.

Yu gave up a lot more bombs on that lollipop curve than his fastball.

Not true, sadly. Darvish gave up 18 homers on fastballs and 8 on breaking/off speed pitches. That is unless you consider his cutter an off speed pitch, because it's much slower than his good fastball.

All the back and forth on Tanaka is interesting but as always with JD it comes down to whether the acquisition cost + risk = increased value of the TEX pitching system.

The other thought is ... a flat, straight FB whether 89 or 99mph gets killed. Might work in Japan to be able to spot it ... but in MLB batters can spot their swing too when they know exactly where the pitch is going to be.

Darvish -- Harrison -- Holland --

Before last season I would have agreed with you, but after the season Derek had he's our second best pitcher behind Darvish. That's no insult to Harrison either, I'm just going to wait and see how he does when he starts pitching again.

Apparently though his splitter tends to look like his fastball due to the fact that it he releases both of them at the same point except the splitter tumbles out of the zone (he also can throw it for strikes) so as long as he mixes it in with his fastball MLB hitters won't be able to sit on his fastball. Now if he leaves his fastball up in the zone it's most likely going to be crushed due to its flat plane, but if he commands the ball well then he'll be fine by throwing it low in the zone.

JTA ... May have been talked about several pages back ... but I see we missed who would get bumped to make room for Choo.

Wasn't Rafael Ortega ... turned out to be Chris McGuiness. We probably should have seen that coming. Year ago not protected in Rule 5 and returned by CLE. With TEX stacking up 1b talent at the ML-level and Ronald Guzman beginning 2014 @ Myrtle Beach ... McGuiness did not fill the key depth role if he ever really did.

I actually considered mcguiness, but never got involved in that conversation.

Had no clue he was left on the 40. Guess I haven't look at it in a while. I would have said him if I knew he had been on it still. He was really nothing special.

You still didn't make him sound like a potential #1 or #2 and nobody goes to Japan to acquire a #3.

Too many 'maybes' and 'ifs' for an untested guy ... for the money the talking heads say he could command.

Saw this on LSB.

Yesterday, Jamey Newberg sent out an email report in which he proposed this potential Rangers/Marlins trade:
Alex Rios, Michael Choice, Rougned Odor, Luke Jackson, Joey Gallo, Connor Sadzeck, and $8 million for Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna.
This proposal prompted a fair amount of discussion yesterday, and so I thought I'd do a poll on this.
If you were the Rangers, and this trade were on the table, would you make this trade?

I don't think he's a #1 starter either, I think his ceiling is a #2 pitcher but he'll probably be a mid rotation caliber starter when he first comes over stateside. Also I have no idea how the part of your statement that nobody goes to Japan for a #3 is a reason why we shouldn't go after him, I mean we went after Colby when he was in Japan and he fit that description... and I'm pretty sure Tanaka is going to be better than him.

Also the only if is can he keep his fastball low, a lot of experts say that he has the best splitter among all pitchers and his slider is above average.

Yeah I think I'll keep those guys over Stanton.

Well if Stanton was guaranteed to be healthy for the time he was in Texas then I'd consider it more heavily, his injury history is troublesome.

Choice and Ozuna are essentially a wash, and Rios really is only to give them a ML player. So you'd be packaging LuJack, Odor, and Gallo+ for Stanton. Would the Marlins accept that? I don't really know. I would vacillate on this one for a while.

I wouldn't trade all that for a guy incapable of staying healthy

You know I've always wanted Stanton, but damn I don't know on this one. I actually don't think it would take that much, but if it did, I think I would pass. Not that this is the reason, but I love Gallo. Odor will only have a spot on this team if someone moves to 3rd or if we trade EA in the next few years.
