Like TP said in another thread, they signed one of the top 2 or 3 safeties in FA. They signed Delmas to an incentive-based contract and have backups in case he doesn't pannout(Spievey not included).

The way I look at it is, if Delmas goes down again, the Lions will still have one more safety on the field than they did last year.

You guys must really suck at life

Thanks for noticing.

I think Safety has to be tied for first as the position where the Lions made the largest FA upgrade of any this offseason (RB being the obvious other position). You can only do so much in FA and keep your cap manageable.

Obviously we did sign Quin, so clearly his statement is inaccurate, which is what those replies from thruthefog and myself were in response to. Also, if Delmas goes down again, Don Carey is the next guy up, and he played pretty decent football for us last year.

Last time I checked you played 2 safeties and Delmas was the strong safety. Quinn was picked up to fill one of the two spots...the FS/Slot cover. If Delmas can't go who do they pair???? What safety did they pickup in the draft? What depth do they have behind Delmas? The Lions did not address the SS position except by resigning the Ryan Raburn of the Detroit Lions...Spivey.

Carey played pretty decent???? WTF?

There is no "strong/free" safety in our system. Just two safeties that are expected to do similar things.

Then you need to check again, you're working with some very dated (i.e.- 2008 or earlier) information there. Like Micro said, we don't run a strong safety and free safety. Most teams don't anymore because it makes the defense more predictable. The modern safeties need to be interchangeable in today's defenses.

If Delmas can't go who do they pair????
Our #3 safety, Don Carey.

What depth do they have behind Delmas?
Our #3 Safety, Don Carey.

I take it your one of the "fans" who doesn't actually watch the games then, hey? Anyone actually watching late last season would have been hard-pressed not to be impressed with Carey's play off the bench. He proved to be a very capable back-up whose not a liability out there if one of the starters goes down.

I think that "WTF" needs to be directed right back at you for that one...

I think you have to have 40 or 50 posts first.

True, but it's hard not to respect Rodgers. I hate the Packers without question, but Rodgers is a helluva QB and a good guy to boot.

I also hate that he Packers went from Farve to Rodgers... one Hall of Fame QB to the next. Lucky bastards. I think GB is due for a long, dark period after A-Rodg hangs 'em up...

How about Bill Belichek.....He's a genius. He saw trouble coming from Hernandez before anyone else. Now they have Tebow to play TE......He's got a crystal ball I tell ya.

anyone watch courtland finnegans interview with NFL network.com last week...he said the rams are poised for a big year, and if anyone other than the rams are goin to the super bowl, he would pick the lions as his sleeper/surprise team to do so...anyone see that?

Nice!

I know I'll catch shit from the negative contigent for being posative about us singing a scrub and all, but I'll take a veteran safety over Robiske any day of the week. And that's exactly the way I look at it- we swapped out a camp-body WR for a veteran safety. Even if Hope doesn't make the team (which he might not because he's getting up there in years), we're better for it because he can actually compete for a spot on the 53 man roster. Robiske didn't have a shot, at all, of making the final 53 with the guys we have in front of him at WR...
