You're probably right. There's been exactly 3 teams win a playoff game the last 4 years. Not exactly going out on a limb there.

And you lumped ND in with Michigan as both needing progressive OC coaches. It's why I felt the need to respond because that was complete idiocy.
I could see Ohio State and Oklahoma winning a playoff game very soon. If Herman has Texas on the right path, they could be right there as well. And I did lump them in with michigan because they both do need better offenses. Hell, michigan was better offensively than ND this year from an efficiency standpoint, and even their fans thought their offense needed a fresh face running the show. We'll see how they turn out. The point is, unless you're getting #1 classes every year like Alabama, you need to be innovative in how you run your offense.

We run the same offense as Ohio State. The same scheme. We are 22-4 over the last two years with him as OC. We are 7-4 against ranked teams.

I guess we'll see what happens this year. Maybe Book takes the next step and becomes an elite QB and you knock off a top 10 team for the first time since 2013. All I'm saying is, you're an all-time blue blood who seems stuck in that 2nd-3rd tier of teams. Just like michigan.

He was already pretty good this past season(7th in Total QBR). And that's what we are as a program these days. We aren't going to dominate in the modern era the way Bama/Clemson currently are. We'll never be able to recruit at such a level. My guess is we'll probably be a top 15 offense like we have been on average the last 2 years, and probably lose a couple games in the regular season because our schedule will be tougher.

I guess this is where I don't get it. You guys have limitless resources, high end facilities, one of the richest histories of any program, and unlike other programs your players get to see the whole country every year with your schedule. When you're pulling a top 10 recruiting class on average every year, it makes no sense that you shouldn't be a top 10 program at least almost every year, if not every year, but it's only happened twice under Kelly.

Yeah we have all those great things but no players in state, and most surrounding states. That's why we need to be independent or it would greatly decrease our recruiting. And our avg recruiting class(minus his 2010) is 12. And his winning % is 15th among P5 programs and he has 4 top 12 finishes. He has one really awful year, but everything else has been fine.

You can cherry pick all you want, but since he's been at ND they're averaging 10th in recruiting rankings, and is 17th overall in the nation in winning percentage. Also, why do you need to be independent to recruit in that area? Ohio State, michigan, Penn State all have no issues with it. Also, since when is "top 12" a thing?

Don't get me wrong - I want ND to be elite again. There's nothing stopping them it would seem. Maybe Urban will catch the bug again and head there in 2021 or something, who knows. It might take something like that to get ND to snap out of it. I know I would be annoyed if we had a coach for 9 years and I just thought things were "fine".

Lol. No they are not avg a 10th ranked recruiting class on avg. I even took out his 2010 year which was 15th. So not cherry picking as that would help my case. We need to be independent because we can't pull kids from the south/West without it IMO. OSU and PSU have alot more instate talent. Michigan is similar to us. Top 13 isn't a thing. I was just comparing to where his avg recruiting rank was since he's been at ND.

And I'm indifferent towards Kelly. I'm not sure if we get someone better than him though. Just look at the guys we had before him.

You are right, I did my math wrong when I first figured it out. 11.66 average overall. If you take out 2010, it's 11.25. My bad there.

Why can't you pull kids from the south/west without being independent? OSU and michigan do it without a problem.

I'm not saying it's impossible to pull kids from the south/West. Being independent really helps with that process. Don't get me wrong, we are still a very good recruiting program. We just aren't elite. We've only had one top 5 recruiting class the last decade.

Any actual input on the topic?

Yeah, if you guys don’t go at least 11-1 then I’d be shocked. That schedule (not your fault mostly) isn’t the hardest.

Any other bucknuts you think I can get with my 8-4 predictshun?

I was figuring 10-2 depending on the Fields situation. It'd be dumb to assume anything more than that. At Nebraska, at Northwestern, and at michigan could be three ranked road teams, and we still get MSU, PSU, and Wisconsin at home. Depends entirely on who underachieves and who plays to their capability, really.

I think the next one you "get" would be your first.

For all we know? Urban had Barrett before Day was there, and he was a dud for two seasons. Then Day got there and he had the most productive season of his college career. Day has also surrounded himself with some amazing coaches as well. Nothing to think he can't be a really good coach, and nothing about michigan in 2019 is scary.

JT Barrett had his best year in 2014. Hence the reason it was the only time he was named to an all-American team (3rd team all American) and was named Freshman of the Year.

He set career bests in passing yards per game, rushing yards per game, Y/A, QB rating, rushing yards and rushing yards/A.

He had basically the same amount of total offense in 2014 as he did in 2017 and he played in 2 less games.

But why let facts get in the way of a good story, because everyone KNOWS you aren’t a homer:suds:

2 more total TDs, 1 fewer INT in 2017. Also didn't have close to that 2014 supporting cast -

NFL record-breaking WR, arguably top WR in the NFL
Leading rusher in the NFL 2 of the last 3 years
1st round pick/Top rated rookie LT in 2016
Two more 2nd round draft picks at WR

This the part most fans don’t seem to grasp. The immediate core of a recruiting class is in state talent. Without the top tier talent in state — it makes recruiting exponentially tougher.

All the top end facilities in the world are great equalizers, but all the top teams have top end facilities.

When a recruit is brought up by his parents watching ‘fill in the blank’ (Bama, USC, Texas, Georgia, OSU, etc) their whole life — it takes a lot more convincing to get them to leave their state or area they live in.
