I actually think you missed the joke here....

'A couple of turds thought "The Browns" team name is racist... '

* So I know you're being cynical here however if the Cleveland Browns were the Brownskins they probably would have lead the charge before the Redskins.

Further illustrating the PC level attributed towards Engines

Er.... Injuns...

I'm mean Indians.

:suds:

This is VitaMikes' orignal post.

* Disclaimer - Please forgive the satire comments.....
Yeah a little too edgey for that thread IMO and not very PC ... Thanks for moving it here retro.

So yah, I am a happily married guy who likes to have fun. I am 53 years old and never had any kids and never will. So this is one of my few toys. No...I don't consider myself rich, but I like to think of myself as a hard worker. I have spent a lot of time renovating apartment houses on the side and now it is paying off! You know, this is all your fault, I gotta admit, when I saw your Mustang avatar, this made me change mine.

Glad you changed your avatar Zeke. Us Ford guys got to stick together! We're badly outnumbered albeit by the inferior GM crowd.

Wish I had the $$$ to own something like that. I think it would be an interesting race between your avatar and mine. The BOSS was detuned from the factory for insurance reasons, but anybody who knew what they were doing could rouse the sleeping giant. Alas I still think the Cobra would beat the BOSS 429 Mustang though. The A/C Cobra was the fastest production car ever made, and as far as I am aware still holds that distinction.

In my younger days I had a project going with a buddy of mine. I had a sky blue 67 Mercury Comet that I had the intention of putting a 429 into. I couldn't afford to complete the project on my own so I sold the car to my buddy with the idea that he would do all the "car" work and I would just concentrate on the engine. Well, needless to say the car never got done. I ran out of $$$ and we had to delay the project, and subsequently he went and wrecked the car in the meantime. It's a shame we didn't get it done. He had some kind of complicated formula (he was a chemist and also a math teacher so he knew this stuff) that he had figured out that we would get the quarter mile time somewhere in the high 10s with all we had planned on doing to the car. After he wrecked the car, I ended up trading the engine to another buddy of mine for his 67 Mustang Fastback. That I eventually sold to. That in retrospect was a mistake too. But, as they say, "Hindsight is always 20/20"

It's pretty ironic that we have similar interests in a lot of things!

The 429 is one badass motor! At the time you could tell that Ford only wanted 1 thing. To be the best! They really had to modify the Mustang just to make that monster motor fit into the car! I wonder how many of them actually still exist? Back in the day, it was Chrysler with the hemi that dominated. Then Ford unveiled the BOSS. Too bad it only lasted 2 years. At the time I was only 10 years old. too young to buy one. I have never seen one, only in pictures/TV. I don't think this crate motor could beat it in a straight line. Maybe on a windy road. I guess we'll never know. Here you go:

Where's the battery??.....LOL

I remember the Comet! The 67 is a cool style! I think I already told you my buddy has a 1970 Torino with a 429(non Boss) that he built himself. There's is no way I would attempt to build one. I don't really have the place to do it.

Buying a kit car has its risks, there is really no guarantee for that amount of $$. The problem that I made with my 1st Cobra was that I saw a car that I liked, but I didn't really investigate the builder. Come to find out it was only his 2nd build ever. He took the cheap way out on a lot of things. Needless to say, I spent a lot of money/time on repairs. But I did learn a lot from the 1st Cobra when purchasing the 2nd. They do hold their value, I sold the 1st Cobra for 2 grand more than what I paid for it. But that didn't cover the repairs that I made. My new Cobra is sweet, the builder actually had 3 of them for sale. This guy was a pro with a top notch shop. He has been building hot rods for 45+ years a is very reputable. He gave me a break down of how the car was purchased, prepped, assembled then tested. I have all invoices proving the cost. He even made a video throughout the build. The biggest problem I have now is giving people rides. Everyone wants a ride!

I used to go to Super Ford weekend at Maple Grove Raceway near Morgantown, PA almost every year. They had some pretty wild stuff there, including plenty of BOSS 429 Mustangs, GT40s, Panteras, and some wild custom stuff. Bet you didn't know that Ford actually put the 429 into a few Pintos in the 70s. I've seen a few of them there as well. They also always have the Cobras there too, but they're always kit cars. Nobody in their right mind is going to display a 1 million dollar vehicle without an armed guard escort!

I was at the Carlisle Auto Show one year and got to see a Ford Thunderbolt. Guy had ropes around it so you couldn't get too close. My buddy actually owned a Thunderbolt in his younger days. But like the idiot he was, he got tired of it and eventually sold it. Ford only ever built 102 of those cars. It had on the dashboard a metal plate that said "Ford Experimental Race Car" and the production #.

The BOSS engines were a true monster. That engine and the Chrysler Hemi were the only two true Hemispherical head engines. The heads on that engine were huge as you can see in your picture. All these cars are worth a fortune.

Ah, if we only knew then what we know now, we'd be millionaires with a limited investment...

Zeke,
That reminds me...I had a friend in high school that had a Gran Torino....stock white. When we took it out on the town it looked like your grand dad's car but it was wicked fast. If we had the gonad's to race for pink slips back then we could of had a whole garage full of cars. Talk about a sleeper. Real fun car to drive.

Damn guys, keep up this convo about cars. I don't know much about them personally but actually learning some just reading this. Plus I'll be going to a Barrett/Jackson auction in Vegas in Sept. No, not to bid(I wish). Nice to have a little knowledge walking in. If you guys would like I could take some pics and post them on here.

I didn't know about the Pinto, but in 1969 Ford built 2 Cougars with a Boss 429 in it. They were all manual transmissions with No AC! The motor was just too dam big!...LOL

We go to Carlisle now and then, I haven't really heard of the other place, sounds interesting. I'll have to ask my buddy about it. We are huge Ford buffs and are willing to travel for a good show. He is a used car dealer and is always taking me with him(to auctions) just so he doesn't have to tow it back!

My buddy just has the "Torino", it is not the Grand Torino. Here is a pic, it is actually the same color as his. His car originally had a 351 in it but he changed it to a 429. Real cool car!

I actually didn't purchase one until I was 50 years old. Always liked hot rods but didn't really have the money or the place to store it. But now I do. Really cool to have one, I am amazed by the look on peoples faces when you drive by! There are some that actually chase you down to talk about it.

IF you go to BJ, by all means, take some pics. Not sure what type of cars you are interested in, Ford?Chevy? But if you see any Cobras/Mustang Boss 429's take some pictures. Also note the selling price! Always curious of what they are selling for! Thanks fro chiming in!

That is a nice Torino Zeke. Looks like its in pristine condition too. And that's one on me, I didn't know about the 429 Cougars. I do have some pictures from when I used to go, but I have no idea where they are at now. They were taken with a 35mm, no digital. I'll have to see if I can find them and post a few.

Also, earlier I said my Comet was a 67. My bad, it was a 68. I think the 68s were a little bigger than the 67s. It already had a 302 in it, but there was a company in Minnesota who made a specialty kit for the 429 installation into the Comet. Included motor mounts, special headers, few other things I don't remember now.

Ford weekend at Maple Grove this year is September 13-14. If you're interested Zeke, we could make plans to meet up there. I don't know how far you are from Maple Grove, but here is the website with all information and directions. Anybody else interested is welcome for that matter as well. Some of the stuff you see there is pretty exotic to say the least. And best of all its only Ford, not any of that GM junk. You know what they say, "Buy a Chevy, they're the best. Drive a mile and walk the rest"

Longtime, yeah pictures are always good for a good conversation. Had my share of decent cars, wish I had any of them now. Always traded them for what at the time thought was an upgrade. Not so sure how that worked out now.:L Had 52 chev pickup with the port hole windows, 66 Chevelle with a 427,:suds: 57 Bellaire with a upgraded 327, among a few others. Wow time flies, now just 3 BMWs, 85, 93 and 05, a 2004 1500 Ram and a restored 1979 Toyota 4X4 shortbed. All I need is a gun turret and it could be a fighting vehicle in the mid east. It will climb a wall but the 4 speed doesn't do well on freeways, haha. Enjoying the car conversation and a good thread for it.

Sounds like you were a Chevy man in your younger days Blue. Ah, that's OK though. Nothing like some diversity to spark some good-natured ribbing back and forth. Now we just need the Chrysler people to chime in. :tea:

The Chrysler man has arrived. I have owned quite a few Mopars. My first was a 1964 Plymouth Belvedere Wagon with a 318 c.i. That was a work car. I have owned a 1963 Plymouth Valiant with a 273 small block, three on the tree, a 1974 Duster with a 225 slant six, three on the tree, a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T that I restored with a 440 Magnum, automatic 727 transmission, posi rear-end. Then it was a 1968 Plymouth Satellite, with a 318, automatic, a 1972 Dodge Dart, another slant six, a 1997 Dodge Avenger with 3.0 Liter six, a 1995 Eagle Talon with a 2.0 Liter Turbo, several Dodge Minivans with 3.0 Liter sixes, and a 2000 Chrysler Concorde with 3.5 Liter six. Now I own a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 with 5.7 Liter Hemi. I also have a 1997 BMW 740iL that is my evening-out car. I have owned a littany of motorcycles over a 30 year period as well.

I'd like to find a Dodge Neon SRT-4, a badass little car and a I want one of those new Hellcat Hemi cars such as a Challenger or Charger. Badass to the core! It is safe to say that I am a quintessential motorhead and I routinely go to the track on many of the series from F-1 to NHRA. But, too many cars, not enough money or garage space, and certainly not enough time.

I wish I had one of those in that condition or I kept the 1969 Dodge Charger R/T I had. Both are worth beaucoup bucks these days, Rambunctious.

A 1970 Dodge Challenger is one of my dream cars. Have you ever seen the movie Vanishing point? the original movie.... not the one made a few years ago. That movie is why I'm a Mopar guy. If you haven't seen it you should look it up. Awesome car chase movie.

Nice thread, yeah I was a Chev guy early Boss but really liked all muscle cars. My dad also had a 69 Charger like retro and my best friend had a 66 Mustang fastback. Loved that car. I remember going to Colorado Blvd the night before the Rose Parade for quite a few years with my Chevelle and my budies Mustang and another friend with a Plymouth 351 Fury and race guys from light to light. What it was to be young.

I envy you in a lot of ways. Nowadays it's how f*cked up you can get at your buddies house and driving home and laughing about it the next day. Enjoy those memories, my dad often tells me the same stories about his day and all of the awesome cars he used to have. My mouth just drops when he says he bought a new GTO for 5500. lol:bawling:
