Benson could be a contributor on special teams right away, and at 6-foot, 180 pounds, he fits Detroit’s preference for a speedy receiver who could potentially spread the field deep.

The Lions give up 2022 5th and 7th round pick for this WR

Add in giving up a 2022 4th round pick to move up in 2021 draft in order to draft Barnes. Looking like a smart move so far

If Golladay, Marvin Jones and Agnew all stay healthy and meet the Compensation Pick criteria then we'd presumably receive 3rd, 4th and 6th round picks respectively for those 3

Keep your fingers crossed

The Lions acquired Denver Broncos receiver Trinity Benson via trade late Monday night, a person familiar with the deal told the Free Press.

In exchange for Benson, the Lions gave up fifth- and seventh-round draft picks in 2022 and acquired a sixth-round pick in 2023, KUSA-TV in Denver reported.
I hate this, giving up a 5th for a guy who is no more proven than Kennedy?

This is a Quinn level move.

IDK about that. I get it that this player was on their PS for two years but that WR group on Denver was pretty stacked with Sutton, Jeudy, KJ Hamler, the latter two just drafted in 2020.

Holmes was the LAR Director of CFB scouting, so he must've have seen something in Benson that "he currently thinks" could be a better option going forward.

Most of us "fans" have liked what he has done so far with this draft and how we perceive those players to become good to really NFL players.

There's absolutely no guarantee that Benson was/wasn't going to make Denver's final 53. Tim Patrick was another possibility of making their final 53.

We're 7th in the pecking order for players who are waived in order to waiver wire claim. Waived players are those that have less than 4 years of accrued NFL seasons - accrued season is being on an NFL 53 man roster of at least 6 games, per season. That player needn't not play or be active. He simply has to be on the 53 man roster

Perriman was released as he had 5 accrued seasons

Tim Patrick making it in the NFL blows my mind, he was either gauranteed for a critical drop, or an untimely injury. Physical tools had always been elite though

So, he is pretty much Perriman without that top end speed ?

tbh, I thought that Holmes might try a waiver claim or minimal trade possibility for the Broncos other WR, Tyrie Cleveland - not Benson.
Simply guessing on the above

It seems like maybe Brad Holmes got fleeced here.

Broncos Insider Benjamin Albright doesn’t seem to think that though.

“He was WR5 on a pretty stacked roster. I think the Lions got a good deal.” Albright told Pride of Detroit. “Saw him go from a really good athlete to a good football player. He was loved by his teammates. Says a lot about the guy.”

Albright mentioned that Benson’s best strength, besides being a hard worker and good teammate, was that he’s best used on deep routes. Theoretically, the 6-foot, 180 pound receiver could be to the Lions what they hoped Breshad Perriman could be. A guy who can flat out run, catch deep balls, and keep the defense honest by stretching the field vertically.

His weakness does present an issue, though. Albright says he has trouble getting off the press and setting up short routes. This, of course, puts a limit on what the Lions can do with him.

Perhaps this is just a case of the Lions, who are lined up to have a couple extra compensatory picks next year, taking a flier on a guy who can benefit from more exposure in Detroit where he’ll get a chance to see some regular season targets.

“He’ll make the roster, and work his way into playing time,” Albright said. “Probably best as a WR3/4 as a slot option.”

^^^^^^

That's pretty much all we currently have is WR3/4 slot option minus T. Williams
Maybe Cephus and his slow 4.7 forty sees action as Z - until he's released also

Up to six of the players can have more than two years of NFL experience,

The players the Lions already cut prior to Tuesday are generally regarded as ones the team has no real interest in bringing back to the practice squad.

BB_72: Alll RRRRiiiightttt we're interested in Lamar Jackson for our "practice squad"
