I'm assuming this is at the time the games were played. Exactly why Franklin scares me as an X's and O's guy.

From my brief scan of the chart, these coaches have winning records against the top 25 at their current school:

Nick Saban
Gus Malzahn
Jimbo Fisher
Mark Richt
Les Miles
Urban Meyer
Bob Stoops
Mark Helfrich
David Shaw

Did I miss anyone?

50-23 is a crazy stat.

53-20 would have meant 3 more NC's.:pound:

I would imagine this is using rankings at the time of play.

I'm assuming this is at the time the games were played. Exactly why Franklin scares me as an X's and O's guy.

As best as I can determine, these are game-time rankings and NOT season rankings.

For example, Bill Snyder at KSU: coached from 1989-2005 & 2009-2013.
Your reference has him as 23-43-0---0.3485
1989-2005 record vs year AP ranked teams is 14-41-1
2009-2013 record vs year AP ranked teams is 4-12-0
Total record vs year AP ranked teams is 18-53-1---0.2569
Big difference.

Likewise, with Frank Beamer at VT: coached 1987-2013
Your reference has him at 43-50-1---0.4628
1987-2013 record vs year AP ranked teams is 30-60-1---0.3352

Even Saban's data is way off. He coached:
Toledo 1990
MSU 1995-1999
LSU 2000-2004
Bama 2007-13

Your reference has him at 50-35-0---0.5882
Toledo 1990 record vs year AP ranked teams is 0-0-0---0.0000
MSU 1995-1999 record vs year AP ranked teams is 9-16-0---0.3600
LSU 2000-2004 record vs year AP ranked teams is 8-12-0---0.4000
Bama 2007-13 record vs year AP ranked teams is 19-12-0---0.6129
Total record vs year AP ranked teams is 36-40-0---0.4737

Some others
Mark Richt 23-34-0---0.4035
Jimbo Fisher 7-6-0---0.5385 13 games!
Bob Stoops 34-29-0---0.5397

The most impressive is Steve Spurrier:
coached Duke 1987-1989 record vs year AP ranked teams is 1-5-0---0.1667
coached Florida 1990-2001 record vs year AP ranked teams is 39-26-1---0.5985
coached So Carolina 2005-2013 record vs year AP ranked teams is 18-25-0---0.4186
total record vs year AP ranked teams is 58-56-1---0.5087 115 games!!!

For reference Bobby Bowden
coached WVU 1970-1975 3-7-0---0.3000
coached FSU 1976-2009 69-65-1---0.5148
total 72-72-1---0.5000 145 games!

I wish the stat geeks who came up with this had sense enough to use end season rankings. It's pretty stupid to credit Bama with a win over #9 Clemson in 2008 for instance, when they finished the season unranked. Bama is 18-9 vs end-season top 25 AP, 2008-present.

The problem with a list like this is that it lacks context. For example, Brady Hoke's numbers aren't that good, but........he spent most of his time as a head coach at Ball State. A place where it is about as hard as a place it is to win as a school can get, and doesn't play too many top 25 teams (except as a whipping boy). However, back in 2006, while they ended up losing to top 10 ranked Michigan, the Brady Hoke lead Ball State squad put up a damn good fight. So considering the talent gap, he showed even back then he is a pretty good coach, even in a losing effort.

Well there's quite a few coaches on that list that have showed to be pretty good coaches despite a loss.:L

Why 2008 and not 2007?

I am guessing you mean scared as in afraid Franklin will fail. I wouldn't worry too much about that if I were you. Yeah he only beat one ranked team but remember we're talking Vanderbilt.
He was the first coach in their history to beat multiple teams with winning records in consecutive years.

That is 2012 and 2013, beat two teams with winning records both years. Doesn't seem like much but think about the total number of teams with winning records Vanderbilt has beat since 1985,14 and 5 of those were in 2008.

Also 7 bowl games in Vanderbilt's history, 3 under Franklin.
Only back to back 9 win seasons in Vandies history
5-3 SEC 2012 4-4 SEC 2013.

And this is Vandy in the SEC.

Tell you what, just to alleviate your fears, I'll give you Pelini and we'll take Franklin.

Nice of you to change this to something totally different than the original post just because your coach started at Bama in 2007.

That list was compiled by a non-Alabama fan and has absolutely nothing to do with Nick Saban starting at Alabama in 2007. Hell, if it was about cherry picking a stat, it would start at 2008 anyway.

It only went back to 2007 because that's as far back as he could get the stats for end of the year rankings.

The supremely excellent CFBStats.com does have record against teams ranked in the AP Poll at the end of the year going back to 2007, however.
And yes, cfbstats.com is supremely excellent, I agree.

The original stat is just fine.
It gives the career and current school.

Some coaches are just slow learners, that's all.

Try to keep up. Team Speed Kills compiled the list. It's much better than your stupid list which counts bookoodles of teams that didn't even finish the season ranked.

If it's so great, why didn't they have the career stat and then the stat for the current school.

Oh wait, it doesn't look so good then.:yahoo:
