I was speculating and hoping mark madsen would lead us to greatness this year. It is 1 week out of august after all. Anyway Byron is a solid Defense first coach. Not sure what that means for this roster but if he can improve our defense that would be a great thing for this team. Especially if its a multiyear deal going for the next couple of years.

The contract should be in the neighborhood of 3-5 years, Inimical.

Yea me too. Kobe will be doing something similar as a player on the court now that Scott is going to be the HC.

I hope that the first day of training camp, when Kobe walks in, Byron says: Did you bring my donuts, bitch?"

Better luck with injuries alone would have improved last years defense. Hopefully, staying relatively healthy and having a coach who is defense first, should help even more.

Yep I agree on the five-year stretch for that very reason. That would be hilarious if B. Scott said that to Kobe on the first day. lol.

I like the hire. Here's my problem:

We all knew all along this was going to be the guy. We've greatly suspected it all along. So why the wait? Why not have him involved in FA? Why not have him involved with coaching the summer league from the start? Why did we have to be the buttonhole of the NBA by being the ONLY team without a coach?

Geez, short buss.

It does have a bizarre aspect to it Hizzle. That sort of craziness eminates from short buss. For some unknown reason, he generates this shit as some sort of ploy in his thinking that is supposed to present the image that he is demonstrating business acumen and saviness when it is a fantasy of epic proportions that everyone else can identify but this idiot. I think everyone does the "Benny Hill" in their minds. Pat short buss on the head and roll your eyes and let the turd have his fantasy like some rich spoiled little brat which obviously he is.

I think Mitch was more involved in the delay than most want to admit.

Not sure of the reasons however we can't just attribute every unknown we don't agree with to Buss.

I am not suggesting we attribute every unknown to buss, Vita and I haven't done that in the past. I am suggesting that in this known case, short buss is the primary culprit.

I wasn't singling you out Retro however more of a consensus go to for the lot of us for things like this.

That said, it sounds like you have some info that I don't.

How is it 'known' that Buss was calling the shots with the HC hiring process more so than Mitch? :noidea:

 at much of this "to-do" about the coaching search and how long it took. First, the criticism is hiring a coach too fast. Now, when they take their sweet time in an attempt to "get it right", it's too slow.

The Lakers have been undergoing an almost total re-structure/restoration for the past 3 years or so. The franchise has been trying to move from the "Phil Jackson era" to something more like the "Showtime era". This is what Dr. Buss wanted before he passed.

Unfortunately, Dr. Buss died before he could complete the re-structure/restoration. Dr. Buss signed off on both the hiring of Mike Brown and Mike D'Antoni. It is my belief that part of the reason that Phil wasn't hired back was that it had become similar to the circumstances that resulted in Shaq getting traded. Phil had reached a point, like Shaq did, where he may have felt that he was bigger than the organization/could demand and do whatever he wanted with no repercussions.

When Dr. Buss passed, the organization and the "Buss kids" were now left without the leader of the organization and had to mourn the passing of Dr. Buss, adjust to everyone's changed roles and still try to run the Lakers. Anyone think that's easy?

Mistakes were made and with Dr. Buss gone and Jim being in charge of basketball operations, he catches the brunt of the criticism. It is what it is. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

What I will say about it all is this. We all seem to be happy, to some degree or other, with the efforts that the FO has made in the off-season to improve the team. Of course we would have liked to see them land 'Melo, Lebron or both, but they ultimately did what we all figured they would do and went/stayed home. I think we were all encouraged that the Lakers went from "no shot" to "the biggest threat to the Knicks" for 'Melo.

I think we're all more or less happy with who the Laker have (finally) chosen to be the coach, even if we are unclear as to why it took so long.

End of the day, whether it's because Jeanie and Mitch made Jim go sit in the corner, Jim finally figured out that it's best to stay out of Mitch's way or Jim learned from his mistakes and is making better decisions, the Lakers finally seem to be moving in the right direction and something of a clear plan is beginning to be seen.

To me, it doesn't matter why they seem to be heading in the right direction, I'm just happy that they are.

Yep TJF12. You called that awhile back. No matter what the Lakers were doing somebody in fandom wasn't going to be happy. The articles I placed in the OP really have made it clear that short buss's grip on the decision-making process has been altered by an intervention primarily by Jeanie precisely because of his blatant errors and teh direction he had the franchise headed. I think the ship has been righted and I believe that the direction the franchise is now headed will filter to the player level. That positive-based stability will, I believe, allow the Lakers to surprise a lot of people this year.

The Lakers made a huge mistake when they hired Dumbtoni instead of Phil Jackson even if they wanted to go into a post Jackson era. With Jeanie and Phil engaged to be married, they surely could have found a good place for Phil to fit in. I get it they might have wanted true independence, but I personally think it was more stubborn pride in not wanting to admit they needed help.

Any one who thinks that this ship has been correct is delusional - Dr Buss had the advantage of decades of experience and even he made mistakes. It is going to take more than a few years for the children to learn how to run a good organization. Like it or not the Lakers are not marquee club any more, but with in time they can become one after Kobe is gone. With Kobe hogging up close to half of the salary cap, the Lakers are not going to rebuild and that's the reason players like Howard, Lebron and Anthony didn't come. They already knew that It is Kobe's camp.
